[More Lett* Mistakes found in writer's column We realize that this letter will not be printed until the beginning of the fall semester, however, we believe that we cannot allow the rampant inaccuracies of Pamme Eades' article go unanswered. First, we would like to note, briefly, that Eades should improve her spelling as should the copy editor (i.e. Israel, not "Isreal" and ? * 1 Jdum 1IUI JSUfli ). Z\1S0, It wouldn't hurt if her nouns agreed with her verbs. Finally, in an expository essay a point should be made. Eades manifestly fails to accomplish this. Now to the crux of Eades article. The arrest of a kidnapper and murderer (wanted by numerous national and international law enforcement agencies) for crimes against innocent civilians is not a kidnapping. Obeid deserves to be brought to justice, and that is exactly what the Israeli government is doing. Eades declares violence has been endemic to the Middle East since the state of Israel was created in 1947. She conveniently neglects to say that the state of Palestine was created at the same time. Acting with several other < Arab states, Palestine attempted to < obliterate Israel and the Israelis ? men, women and children. ' They have never given up the hope i of utterly annhilating the Israelis. 1 The problem that exists for the j Palestinians today, namely that ' they have no state, is not the fault of Israel, but of another Arab state. < The Jordanians annexed the territ- 1 ory occupied by the Palestine into 1 their country. This territory was later captured by the Israelis during 1 another Arab war of aggression. * Eades is correct in that Israel 1 has been closed-minded in its poli- 1 cies. We must remember that they t have dealing with the small problem of being surrounded by neigh- 1 bors dedicated to their destruction. 1 Until the Camp David summit to which Eades refers, no Arab state . was willing to even entertain the 1 idea of talking with Israel ? let Q alone recognizing the right of Israel to exist in peace. During the Holocaust "thousands upon thousands of Jewish refugees" did not immigrate to Palestine, as Eades claims. Thousand upon thousands of of Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis because the British refused to allow them to enter Palestine and because the United States refused to to**: # a* n r^ EF FRANK SERVED WITH 9 CIPE CHILI, ONIONS & A \ CREAMY COLE SLAW ^ 49J h with coupon ^ ij'percoupQn^g^A Car ^ pon expires .dfc. It seems to us that this a rather large ;rror of fact; one which should be Dbvious. "Shiite" is not a religion ? the religion is calld Islam and sect is called Shi'a. Also the argument Jiat the Shi'a sect is not radical because they are the majority religon of Iran is spurious. The Shiites of Iran are radical as ire most of their supporters. Their 'ollowers are the same lovers of )eace who murdered Anwar Sadat. It's nice of Eades to forgive the \yatollah's transgressions as the ;ame as those of the U.S. and Isael. She has managed to equate ack of understanding (the sin of he U.S. ana Israel) wim coia>looded, premeditated acts of terorism against civilian populations hroughout the world. Eades believes that the Lebanese Christian practice the same religon that Christians practice in this :ountry. She is guilty of the same ack of understanding with which he labels the U.S. and Israel. Mandela, who has not shown any intention of moderating his call for a violent solution to apartheid. is Still one of several leaiti mate spokesmen for the antiapartheid movement. Even black leaders who favor a negotiated end to apartheid, such as KwaZula Chief Minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi, recognize the need for all spokesmen of black South Africa to be a part of these negotiations. Buthelezi, who differs sharply with Mandela on other issues such as the efficacy of international sanctions, believes that freedom of speech for all South Africans is a prerequisite to a peaceful solution. Much to his credit, he extends this notion of freedom even to his political enemies. It appears that the government of South Africa has begun to move toward a similar position; and if it , continues, peace and democracy in South Africa may be closer than anyone previously thought.
