Features Wednesday, July 5,1989 THE GAMECOCK 3 Incredible Fighting battle of bi By CAREN CAMPBELL Features editor If any of you went away to the beach this weekend then you are now probably painfully aware of a problem plaguing us all. We first noticed the problem when we tried on last year's bathing suit which is either too tight or shows too much now. Then, when we got to the beach there was always someone around without an ounce of-Tat on his body (totally destroying our psychological well-being, of course). We all know that the best way to get rid of that extra bulge or two is the dreaded diet and exercise routine. If you don't exercise regularly, or if your potato head doesn't even think about getting your potato butt off that all-too-comfortable couch, you are not alone. Even with all the hype about fitness and health, about 70 to 80 percent of Americans don't exercise. Exercise naturally elevates your moods, reduces stress and promotes psychological well-being. So, why does the thought of exercise cause so many people so much stress? Maybe scenes straight out of Jane Fonda's workout emerge from the dark recesses of your mind, or maybe you just can't picture yourself running down Greene Street in a health-conscious daze. Well, guess what. If it increases your heart rate for an extended amount of time, that's exercising and you might be doing it anyway. Try dancing at any Five Points' club for over 30 minutes and you know what exercise feels like. When people talk of "getting into a sensible exercise program" it doesn't have to be painful. Make sure to prevent unnecessary injuries by wearing the right shoes and clothing and stretching your muscles so they are ready to exercise. Drink lots of water to replace body fluids. However, if you step on the scale and instantly resign yourself to those workouts with Jane, you might not be giving yourself the benefit of the doubt. Experts reveal that the amount and location of fat might be more important than your actual weight. Research suggests that fat on the torso increases health risks more than fat on the arms and legs. The theory is that the torso is more metabolically active, allowing fatty tissue there to dump more lipids and other nasty substances into the bloodstream. So, how do you find out how much body fat you have? Although there are a number of ways to measure body fat including the use of metal calipers and devices that use infrared light, the most accurate body fat measurement is determined by underwater weighing. The only way to get a more accurate assessment of body fat at present is if you take a deceased perr activities to k lys and Saturdays, and and the USC Dance Com Sundays. For reserva- 7-8. Shoup added that although it is a longer process than a skinfold measurement that takes about 10 minutes, it definitely gives people a better assessment of their true body fat measurement. A person is first weighed on traditional scales, then weighed underwater by computer while sitting in a harness. Using a series of conversion charts, specialists can calculate the difference in land and underwater weight to derive the exact percentage of body fat. Acceptable body fat percentages range from 18 percent for men to as high as 27 percent for women. The program which started in April will hopefully be an ongoing service to the public, Spelman said. "We're just getting our feet wet with it now," she said. USC's Physical Education Department will offer the underwater weighing service this summer for $30 which includes a review of results with a consultant.
