Braves lose as season c Editors' note: With baseball season well underway baseball fever is spreading. Since The Gamecock has caught the fever, we will feature a different major league in each summer issue. This week's look will be at the Atlanta Braves. At the beginning of the season many optimistic Braves fans and some sports writers believed the Braves could finish as high as third. It seemed very likely after their better than average start compared to the past several seasons. Unfor tunately, the Braves have slipped back into their losing ways during the past few weeks. One reason for optimism, was the club's movement towards youth. New names like Jeff Treadway, Geronimo Berroa, John Smoltz, Pete Smith, Jeff Blausser, and Tommy Gregg highlight this year's team replacing some of the aged veterans such as Ted Simmons and Ken Griffey. While in the minors, Jeff Treadway wasn't used much as a lead-off man but he is experiencing great success batting first in the line-up ~ 1 *1 L wiin a uauuig aveiage miuugii Sunday. Outfielder Tommy Gregg is another pleasant surprise for "America's Team." Injuries slowed him this year, but he has shown power-batting potential in his limited playing time. Last year's gem, first baseman Gerald Perry, has had a dismal start, but his batting is coming back alive. Perry's season average is around the .250 mark but has hit the ball quite well in his last few games. The offensive spark for the Braves this year has been the seasoned veteran outfielder Lonnie Smith. He leads his team with a .324 batting average and is currently third in the National League. The Braves will need him if they plan to improve from their last place standing in the National League West division. There have been some disappointments for the Braves offense as well. Two time National League Most Valuable Player Dale Murphy has had a poor year. The slugging outfielder is on pace to crank around 17 homeruns, well below his average. The Braves tried to deal Murphy to another team for some pitching or hitting, but they failed to reach an agreement with anyone. There is a power shortage in Atlanta. Shortstop Andres Thomas has been used in the clean-up spot because the Braves can't produce as many runs as they would like out of the fourth spot.Thomas is leading the team with seven homers. Thomas, originally thought to be a premier shortstop in the majo'rsT has fallen short of his expectations at this point in his career. The Braves are eighth in the National League in batting with a .237 average due to their recent inability to score runs. HAYNES Staff writer USC men's tennis has had some major accomplishments this year. Their successes included finishing third in the National College Association of Athletes tournament and a trophy for Coach of the Year. This year's racket bashers finished with an impressive 21-7 record. Along with breaking to the semifinals in the NCAA tourney, men's tennis coach Kent DeMars earned the distinct honor of being named NCAA Tennis Coach of the Year. In only his fifth year as men's tennis coach, DeMars has propelled the USC tennis program into contention for a national championship. Before coming to USC, DeMars headed the tennis program at Southern Illinios University for 11 years where he coached tennis pro superstars Ken Flack and Robert Seguso who finished as the top doubles team in college and are on top of the pro tennis scene. Junior Stephani Simian, who played singles and doubles, finished as the 10th best player in the nation. His partner, senior Ken Diller, who was the second best player in the country, combined to serve as the backbone to USC's success. "He (Diller) was my stopper. Diller is talented and of championship calibur, he said. "We had nine pretty good points," DeMars said. Out of six singles and three doubles games played at each tennis match, most of the teams are stronger in one than the other, he said. USC was strong in both areas accounting for their nine good points, Demars said. "We didn't have superstars but we were really very solid throughout the whole team," DeMars said. USC also had a good bench to back up injured players, he said. "We had four guys on the team who were ail-Americans. Usually in a given year you have one, maybe two," DeMars said. Graduation will take its toll on next year's squad, DeMars said. Their number two, three, and four singles players were lost to graduation, he said. USC's two top doubles teams will also lose one player each, he said. With the good depth they had this year and the good recruiting class of next year, USC may fair well despite their losses. Among next year's recruits will be Mark Parus out of Orlando, Fla. who is ranked number six among high school recruits in the nation fitness P.E. Center. Classes are free, and students need not sign up. "We've had a phenomenal number of participants in Jhe aerobics program," Stewart said. "More than 21,000 participations occurred in the Spring semester," he added. "This is the first summer that-the aerobics program has been offfered."
