Charleston prep: From staff reports It's almost Spoleto time again. Every year in the springtime when the weather begins to get a touch hot and sticky, Charleston freaks out and goes artsy for an entire two weeks. It gets bigger every year. This year, the wild rumpus is scheduled from May 26 through June 11. Spoleto Festival USA recently announced that awardwinning playwright Lee Bessing's Eleemosynary will be presented as its major play production during the festival. Eleemosynary will be produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club in association with Spoleto Festival USA and will star Joanna Gleason, Eileen Heckart and Robin Morse and will be directed by Manhatten Theatre Club artistic director Lynne Meadow and designed by John Lee Beatty. Eleemosynary is a touching and often humorous story of three generations of women and their struggles to communicate with anc^ ultimately, to reconcile with one another in spite of conflict and misunderstanding. Grandmother Dorothea (Eileen Heckart) is a "notable eccentric" whose bizarre views on life and metaphysical experiments have alienated her daughter, Artie (Joanna leason). Artie abandons her own daughter, Echo (Robin Morse), to Dorothea's care at an early age and strikes out on her own, communicating only infrequently by phone with Echo. Echo is a precociously intelligent girl and wins a national spelling championship by spelling correctly the word "eleemosynary," meaning charitable; this aspect of the story gives the play its unusual name. Joanna Gleason recently won a Tony Award for her performance as the Baker's Wife in the smash Sondheim/Lapine Broadway musical Into the Woods. A Tony and Drama Desk nominee for her performance in Broadway's Joe Egg, she has recently appeared in Social Security on Broadway with Marl? Thomas and in the Manhattan Theatre Club's production of It's Only A wulc-i The Woody He ^0^ Orel ^p'*'' ^^g'V'''' Efl You don't have to wa] you graduate to ea good money. f Olsten can show you how to turn your spare time into spare cash.
