'Heady' gang Aussies to swinj By TODD HINES Features editor c Mel Gibson and Mick "Crocodile" Dundee are not the ? only good things emerging from Australia these days. A c five-member band of good time Aussies known as The ? Go-Betweens is touring America. They will make their Columbia debut Friday at c Greenstreet's. \ Don't make the mistake of categorizing these native v outbackers as iust another band Dassine throueh the capital city; it's a lucky break for the musically inclined. The Go-Betweens are not just middle-of-the-road mates 1 from down under. I They have a solid ethereal sound, and the lyrics don't i come from spur-of-the-moment scribblings at the back table of a Denny's. They're a very heady gang. i This will be The Go-Betweens' third North American 1 tour since they formed more than 10 years ago, and they stand as more or less veterans on the circuit. t They also have the distinction of opening for R.E.M., 1 and they will do so again in a few months when the two \ bands go to Europe. i PONT VALUNTEERS<uW%.' The single "Streets In Your Town" is already i video, and there's more to come from the album. Lane contains pop on a higher plane including violin, >boe and harmonica interludes. It will take the listener to varm autumn afternoons and expansive zephonic fields vhere daisies bloom. The focus of the tracks is blues-based, acoustic melody ingering on the subtle yet potent. Hints of Bob Dylan pervade the music and lyrics, and the backing vocals renind one of Edie Brickell. It's a treat to the ear. A few of the most notable songs are "I'm All Right" md "Dive for Your Memory." The entire album, lowever, is a pleasure in vinyl. The promotional tour will take The Go-Betweens hrough the bigger clubs from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., and judging from their potential, it vill be the last time they play anything but Carolina Colseum in Columbia. qua OT MONO? ly need people with Mononucleosis *dical research.
