USC head coach June Raines was furious with the reversal and argued his point, but to no avail as the umpires' decision stood. "I thought the umpire was wrong," Raines said of the disputed call. "That was a run, it was automatic. The umpires said he (Mack) hadn't reached first base yet. They thought they were right." Whether the decision was right or wrong became academic when freshman Brian Lawler hit a double two pitches later to score Thomas and Mack and give the Gamecocks a 6-1 lead. Cardwell did the job at the mound by retiring 13 of the last 15 batters he faced. "Cardwell pitched great. Anytime we'd get somebody on base, he would get us out," Georgia head coach Steve Weber said. Raines was also pleased with Cardwell's performance. "I'm really proud of our pitching," Raines said. "Cardwell had good stuff tonight. He had good control and good command. I was a little concerned about the offense. We have to make better contact and make something happen." Raines' concern with the Gamecock attack was mainly caused by his team's hitting performance in Tuesday night's doubleheader with Mercer. Despite scoring only four runs in the two games, USC swept Mercer 3-1 and 1-0 behind strong pitching performances from Brian Williams and Charlie Young. Williams pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12 in the first game to get the win, while Young scattered seven hits in the second-game shutout. USC travels to Blacksburg, Va., chosen, and the games will be played in July. Members of the Olympic Festival Teams will be eligible for the Junior Nationals Tournament to be played in Spain.
