Pep Talk By Jeff Shrewsbur Dunk adds bea allows players I There's really nothing quite like the slam dunk. It is an athletic feat that many aspire to, but few can master. It's a discipline within the game of basketball ? everyone trains to be the best, to show the world they are king. No other play in the game can signify all the things a slam dunk can. Its sheer force coupled with incredible athletic grace is matched by no other move. It's a special feeling to see a slam dunk: The hushed silence of the crowd as the man takes that final, crucial, leaping step and ascends into the lights above. The players become spectators, and the spectators become a part of the play. The man holds the ball up in his hand, and within a brief second, will either execute a move that no one can stop, or be denied by his own physical misgivings or the intervention of an adamant opponent. He'll either do it or he won't, but that split second of uncertainty is one of the greatest joys for observers of the game. Watching a dunk during a game is a lot like witnessing a car wreck, in that you see what is about to happen, you hold your breath and cringe ? unable to help ? waiting for that final crucial moment of impact when you release an "ooooh" or a grunt. The slam dunk is the single greatest play in basketball because of its impact on the players and its ramification on the game. A jump shot is a beautiful, graceful athletic move. There is only the shooter, the rim and the ball. He arches the ball over the defense, hoping they won't touch it, and the silent anticipation as the crowd waits for a swish or a clang adds excitement to the game. But there are probably 50 jump shots a game in most cases, and almost any player can hit a jumper. It's beautiful, but it's not special. In the average game, there are ? f^WESniDElwor Z OB/GYN CERTIFI / birth control X BIRTH CONTROL SERVICES y Plus one pack of pills (f $40 student rate (rag. $75) { PROBLEM PREGNANCY A 'FREE PREGNAN L ASK ABOUT ' MORE COMFORTABLE, I V Call 798-9299 or toll f V 2301 F Bush River Road I if > /\l So Santa forgot your coi Well, you're in luck, becj in Russell House is givin in February, March and , To enter, all you need to address and local phone of your receipt from eith< or wild Kizza. Gamecoi EMPLOYEES OF MARRIOTT EDUCATIC & THEF RELATIVES Al uty to game, o gain respect probably four dunks, and of those four, there is probably only a single good one. A good slam dunk can change a game by awing the opposition and giving momentum to your teammates. It can change a player by making him respected for his ability. It can change the atmosphere by pumping the home crowd up or silencing a visiting arena. Its importance to the game is immeasurable. A good slam dunk incorporates every aspect of athletic talent that pertains to basketball ? leaping ability, timing, ball control, accuracy, depth perception, judgment, aggressiveness, grace and power. Nothing is more exciting than those one and a half seconds when the man hangs in the air, palming the ball over his head as the other players, powerless to stop him, watch, him fly over their heads and complete his objective. Nothing intimidates players more than being dunked over. The pain of a loss goes away, but there is really nothing that can soothe the humiliation of being abused in front of 10,000 to 25,000 people ? the feeling of helplessness as vou watch the man soar over your head and explode the ball through the rim. The dunk is sometimes the only way smaller players can gain repsect. Dunkers are the middle children of the game of basketball. They must be more aggressive and excel to avoid being overlooked. The best dunkers are the smaller men who had to develop their style. A big man gains respect simply because he's big, while a small man is said to have guts, but it's the middle men who must form a physical identity to gain respect. The slam dunk has given that respect to the middle man ? whether he's playing in the 25,000-seat arenas or just one of the guys playing pick-up on the playground. 1EM?SERVICE^ IED PHYSICIAN j Complete physical X Lab Tests (Blood & Urine) V Blood Pressure Check (f (before and after pill usage) Pap Smear ri Counseling Abortion Services*) CY TESTING* & rHE NEW.
