This write-up made me think about life and how short it can be. One minute you're flipping a burger and laughing, the next you're shot and dead ? your party busted. My Worries: After Lisa Martin's . * story, I began thinking about how in* significant my worries were, and I made a list of them so that I could I hold them in my hand. This list inI; eluded the following: carrying an umbrella around all day when it * doesn't even rain; tripping; having i *- boogers in my nose; running out of Pepsi, money or gas; and Geraldo i * Rivera. My worries came nowhere i close to Lisa Martin's, and I felt guilty for havirfg such a good life. 1 Chaka Khan: I started thinking 1 history her parents worried over a good name for her. I see it now, enroute to the hospital, Chaka's daddy looks at Chaka's mommy and says, "Honey, I've been thinking that Beth or Jane would be good names if our little angel is a girl." Then all cranky and in labor pains, Chaka's mama snaps back and says, "Darling, shut up and drive! This baby is coming out of me, and I'm naming it Chaka no matter what it is." I bet that hair is Chaka's biggest worry. If someone wrestled her down and gave her a good brushing, I bet they'd find a lot of those missing children you see on those milk cartons. Bold Soul Sister: At Bryson Middle School, I had a friend named Josephine Stenhouse, and I nicknam^A A O?i o:?4.?yy i cu uti uuiu ouui oisici uccause | she made fun of me listening to WHYZ's Soul Connection, a Sunday morning gospel radio show. All that Josephine worried about was passing science because our teacher was Mrs. Craig, and Mrs. Craig was the meanest science teacher on the face of the earth, and she demanded a bug collection from every seventh grader before they could become eighth graders. Josephine hated bugs. One day at lunch she said, "I just have a thang about bugs; they just make my skin crawl, ewweeh!" Then she moved her shoulders up and down and shook her whole body, and I knew that Josephine really meant what she said. Passing: In the long run, I killed enough bugs to make me and Josephine a collection. I arranged the two collections differently so that Mrs. Craig wouldn't accuse Josephine of plagiarizing my bug collection. Both of us made it to the ? eighth grade where algebra became Josephine's biggest worry, but I couldn't do anything to help her in that area of her life. Justification: Where does all this leave us? It goes to show that some of as have more reason to worry than Dthers do. It also proves how devastating the effects of grilling out, tair and bug collections can have on t semi-normal person's life living in \merica. Then there are The Pandoras. Leather, fishnet, screams and raunchy lyrics characterize these five Los Angeles rockers who will be taking the stage at Rockafellas' Tuesday. "We're hard rock without the iuu. 11 s gut iikc a naru-uriving, punky-type sound," said lead singer and guitarist Paula Pierce somewhere from a pay phone in Georgia. Two weeks ago the group left their homefront and embarked on a cross country journey that will take them all the way to Canada. They will be promoting their new a 1 b u, m , Rock Hard (Restless/Enigma Records), that already has the critics talking. "It's bigger and better rock," Pierce said, comparing it to two other now obscure releases from the band. "It's something I always wanted to do. It's harder stuff." Pierce said she has always listened to the harder side of music with gobs of punk and metal, but her background lies in oldies rock, including the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, AC/DC and the '60s group, The Chocolate Watchband.
