Raines ? By DAVID CARAVIELLO Staff writer It's been a long, tough climb for USC baseball coach June Raines, but after 12 years he's finally reached the summit. The Big 500. After suffering a heartbreaking 200th loss at Coastal Carolina Tuesday, Raines and his Gamecocks returned to the friendly confines of Sarge Frye Field Wednesday night, whflro - "? 1 ? "It's good to get it over with," Raines said after the game, wet from a Gatorade shower. "I wouldn't want to wait three or four more days to try to take this." USC, now 17-8, jumped ahead early on their way to Raines' milestone win. In the Gamecocks' first at bat, leadoff hitter Mike McGee walked, advanced to third on a single by Kenny Welch and was sacrificed home on a Brian Williams' fly ball to deep right field. Welch, last week's Metro Conference Player of the Week, extended his hitting streak to 15 games with the single. Down 1-0, the Baptist bats came aliye in the fourth inning. After Buccaneer right fielder Earl Smalley walked, center fielder Dan Wolfe laced a double down the left field line, advancing Smalley to third. Smalley scored Baptist's lone run when shortstop Hardy Ferguson slapped a single to tight. The Bucs had the bases loaded later in the inning, but Gamecock starter Matt Threehouse was able to get out of the iam. USC blew a chance to take the lead in the sixth when, with shortstop Lyle resigns from recruiting position Charlie Lyle, director of athletic recruiting at USC for the past four years, resigned Tuesday afternoon to pursue other career opportunities in the private business sector. Lyle was not specific about his future plans, but said the move was not related to the hiring of new USC head football coach Sparky Woods, who replaced the late Joe Morrison. Lyle's primary responsibilities were in football recruiting. "My tenure here at the University of South Carolina has been very rewarding," Lyle said. "I've been fortunate to have been involved with some outstanding and classy individuals here. I feel that the last four years, particularly the last two years, have been extremely exciting for Gamecock athletics, and I feel fortunate to have been a part of that." "Ater so many years at the collegiate and professional levels, an opportunity has arisen that I am going* to pursue." Lyle has 28 years of experience at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He came to USC in July of 1985.
