PEc Eg Ear By TNT Features editors After more than a month of combing the highways and^ byways of America, we had spanned from Columbia to Los Angeles and back. Horror of horrors, we still needed a second group. One fateful night during the graveyard shift, we pulled out of New York and lost track of the time. Suddenly we found ourselves in the Great White North. We knew what to do. Rush, A Show of Hands (Mercury Records)? This is Rush's third official live album, and it ranks as a dilly. Rush is one of the best live performance groups going these days, and this double album ranks as their best quality record yet. It is completely crisp. These boys from Canada continue their reputation of being as fine-tuned out of the studio as in it. Listening to A Show of Hands is like hearing an apocalyptic sermon. The heavy keyboards, the precision the lyrics . . . brothers and sisters get thee to the House of Rush. "Marathon" is their newest song and does justice to their live performance. Churning keyboards and stellar rhythm make this song come across like a musical race, hence the name. As a special bonus, Amy Mann from Til Tuesday sings on "Time Stand Still." Also included is the favorite "Closer to the Heart," which has appeared before on live albums. The most remarkable song is Neal Peart's incredible new drum solo "The Rhythm Method." It alone is worth the entire album. Peart combines electronics into his drum solo with sounds like trumpets and xylophones and makes this drum solo into a somewhat jazzy percussion experience. It is the best drum solo to ever grace our ears. Rush has always distinguished itself with creativity, and the intro is an ingenious way to begin a concert. The album opens to the melody popularized by the Three Stooges. On the final note the band jumps into "The Big Money," the last note of one and the first note of the other. Perhaos thev deserve ranking as the kings of Canada itself. The Pandoras, Rock Hard (Restless Records)? Finally there is a girls group that's not made of sugar and spice and everything nice. These women are tough. No puff-ball melodies here. This, their second album, is a sixsong compilation into the realm of naughty rock from the L.A. scene. A near description of the sound would be a combination of Pat Benetar, Joan Jett and AC/DC. However, they're a little rougher than Benetar, better singers than Jett and have a bit more musical range than AC/DC. The lyrics are like nothing a girl group has ever attempted. They rank pretty risque for anyone. Lead vocalist and guitarist Paula Pierce is equally laudable in her two functions. Her hard voice has rhythm and style to create a unique sound. Sherri Kaplan on drums enhances the group's pulsating beat. "Run Down Love Battery" opens the album and immediately convinces the listener that The Pandoras are not good looking metal impersonators. "Six Times A Day" is a hard rocking tune with even harder lyrics. Kiss, the naughty rock masters, would be proud of some of the things Pierce sings about. Two other songs "He's Coming" and "Craving" also reside in the realm of saucy lyrics. Fortunately, iney too are oacKea oy a sona Peat and pace. But The Pandoras also show they are still ladies with softer harmonies and rhythms in "Tryin' Ain't Good Enough" and "Close Behind." In these two songs you can find a touch of The Bangles, but with just enough throb to distinguish their sound. So, what you've got in The Pandoras is good, loud music with strong lyrics and beautiful women. It's a combination the rock world has needed for some time. But don't just take our word for it. They will be coming to Columbia in April.
