Cromer le to 9th stra By DAVID CARAVIELLO Staff writer Whether or not USC's Tripp Cromer was thinking of his two home runs against Louisville a day earlier as he stepped into the batter's box Monday night against Georgia Tech did not matter. What did matter was that in the bottom of the seventh inning with two Gamecocks on base, as Tech reliever Mike Hostetler hurled his .first pitch toward Cromer, bat connected with ball as Cromer sent Hostetler's delivery soaring through the warm March air, over the outfield fence and out of Sarge Frye Field. As Cromer trotted around the bases, the Gamecock dugout exploded in ebullience, as a 3-1 Tech lead evaporated into the night, and USC went ahead 4-3 on their way to a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the Rambling Wreck. Cromer had done it again. The homer was the junior shortstop's third three-run dinger in the past two days and his seventh of the season. "I was just trying to hit the ball hard," Cromer said. "He threw me an inside fastball, and I turned on it." The victory gave USC head coach June Raines his 499th career victory and boosted his team's record to 16-7 overall, as the Gamecocks finished an 11-game homestand with their ninth straight win. It didn't look that way earlier, however, as Georgia Tech, 17-10, drew first blood in the third inning. With runners on second and third, Yellow Jacket left fielder Ron Raper grounded out, scoring Jon Anderson from third to give Tech a 1-0 lead. The Jackets added another run in the inning as third baseman Andy Bruce scored Mike Reynolds on an infield hit. Tech's final run came in the fourth, as an Anderson groundout scored teammate Tom Green from third. Gamecock starter Brian Rountree had the bases loaded in two innings, the fourth and fifth, yet was able to escape with only one run scoring. "There were two innings there that they could have broken the game open with a base hit and they didn't do it," Raines said. "After that, he (Rountree) settled down." Down 3-0, USC didn't poke into the run column until the fifth inning. Welch scored when Tech second baseman Darren Bragg bobbled the cutoff throw. Bragg was charged with an error as USC cut the Tech lead to 3-1. In the seventh, USC erupted. After Welch opened the inning by popping out, Williams launched a rope off the chest of Tech shortstop Mike Reynolds and reached first on the error. Right fielder Skeets Thomas advanced Williams to second on a sacrifice fly, and first baseman Derrick Mack walked, setting the stage for Cromer's three-run shot that gave the Gamecocks a 4-3 lead. USC added an insurance run in the eighth, as catcher Tray Witt tripled and center fielder Mike McGee sacrificed him home to give the Gamecocks a 5-3 final advantage.
