Gamecocl in NCAA By JEFF NICHOLS Staff writer The USC men's basketball team came into its NCAA East Regional first-round contest against North Pornlino Qtofo - 1 vw.iu ^iklv injpmg iu Keep us season-long roller cogster ride going long enough to make it to the top of the hill at least one more time. But at times during Friday's 81-66 loss to the Wolfpack at the Providence Civic Center, the Gamecocks must have felt more like they were climbing a mountain. Like when the Wolfpack defense, designed to contain USC's only consistent outside scorer, Brent Price, limited the sophomore guard to only one shot and no points during the first half. Or when State outscored the Gamecocks 26-5 en route to building a 30-10 lead with 7:16 remaining in the opening period. "It's been up and down like a rollercoaster all year," senior forward Terry Dozier said. "We've been at the pinnacle of our game at times and in a bottomless pit at others." This lack of consistency made the Gamecocks' first trip to the tournament since 1974 a brief one. After spotting State its 20-point lead early, USC went on to outscore the Wolfpack 56-51, cutting the lead to eight points twice in the second half. That was due largely to USC head coach George Felton's decision to revert back to pressure man-toman defense after the Gamecocks opened the game in a surprise 3-2 zone. In Saturday's match against No. 9 Texas A&M, USC lost 5-4 after winning the first three singles matches. One of the bright spots for USC was the first No. 1 doubles victory of the season for partners Magdalena Ringstrom and Cyndee Newton. On Sunday, the ladies fell 5-3 to Mississippi State. The match featured an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory in No. 1 singles by freshman Michelle Duda. The Lady Gamecocks will face Auburn at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Maxcy-Gregg courts.
