USC select* From staff reports On any given night in the United States there are 735,000 homeless p^aple, and about 6 million Americans are at the extreme risk of becoming homeless. This is no laughing matter, but a number of America's top comedy performers are taking action. "Comic Relief III," a benefit performance to raise awareness and funds to help America's homeless, will be shown nationwide on HBO Saturday. USC has been selected among 10 universities across the pniintrv fr> nrnmnlp thp nprfnrmanrp Throughout the week the special programs committee of the Carolina Program Union is showing a tape of "Comic Relief II" in the Golden Spur during lunch. Tshirts, buttons and posters are being given away each da\ to promote the event. At 9 p.m. Saturday, the Golden Spur will present live the broadcast of "Comic Relief III" with more giveaways. Everything is free. Nearly 40 percent are women and/or children younger than 15. More than 60 percent have at least a high school diploma, and one third have some college education. "Comic Relief-supported projects documented a 30 percent increase in their client caseload in the past two years among the 23 cities the benefit funds support. Families and young children make up more than half of this increase. In Cos Aneeles alone therp are 17 OOO. homeless anrl funds are only available to serve serve 18,000. Other big cities are similar. The problem of increasing housing costs and inflation can be attributed to the rise in homeless Americans.
