Metro Continued f Semifinal ~ Sc?si M ?e By DAVID CARAVIELLO Staff writer Looking fatigued and overmatched, USC was blown off its home court in Saturday's Metro Conference semifinal, suffering a lopsid ed 80-63 defeat at the hands fcf Florida State. The loss, only USC's third at Carolina Coliseum this season, also marked the third consecutive time the Seminoles have beaten ftie Gamecocks. After USC won the opening tip, Gamecock guard Barry Manning connected on a 19-foot jumper to give USC what would be its only lead of the game at 2-0. FSU soon built an early 6-point lead on a Tharon Mayes breakaway layup six minutes into the contest, giving the Seminoles a 16-10 lead. USC tied the game 20-20 on a Terry Dozier bucket at the 11-minute , mark, yet that would be the closest the Gamecocks would get, as FSU's first-half lead ballooned to 14 points !|| Got a news tip? :i HI Call The Gamec I pi in cti gl SENATE AT MARION ST. Brent Price cut the lead to nine by connecting on a 3-pointer with seven seconds left, but the Seminoles went to the locker room holding a 40-31 advantage. In the first five minutes of the second half, USC outscored Florida State 10-4 to whittle the Seminole lead to 3 points at 44-41, before FSU coach Pat Kennedy called time out with 15:12 remaining. The time out destroyed the Gamecocks' momentum and allowed FSU to go on a 24-9 run bet ore USC head coach ueorge Felton called a time out of his own with 6:25 remaining and the Seminoles holding a 70-50 advantage. The rest was academic, with FSU enjoying its largest lead at 80-56 with 1:26 left.. Felton thought the Seminoles' control of the tempo hurt his team. "I think we let the tempo swing, and we really didn't execute our offense," Felton said. "We were impatient, we took quick shots, and we got into their tempo. We made a great run in the second half and cut it to three points, and probably just ran out of steam there." v.v'v ock at 777-7726 H ||p 749 SALUOA AVE.
