It was after this performance, ir which Jordan poured in shots from everywhere on the court against double and triple teams, that Bird offered his now famous appraisal ol the one they call Air Jordan: "He's God disguised as Michael Jordan." In his third year in the NBA, Joi dan was again runner-up for MVP honors. This time he finished second to Johnson in the balloting after scoring 3,041 points, establishing himself as the only player other than Wilt Chamberlain to score more than 3,000 points in a season. After averaging 35.0 points a game in the 1987-88 season, it was finally Jordan's turn for the NBA's most prestigious individual honor. He finished ahead of Johnson and Bird in the MVP balloting. And to answer the growing number of critics who belong to the "Michael Jordan's game depends on scoring" club, he set a career-high mark for assists (485 ? 18 more than Bird had). Jordan was chosen Defensive Player of the Year by the NBA's head coaches after he finished the '87-88 season with more than 200 steals and 100 blocks for the second time in his career, which is two more times than what Bird, Magic or anyone has ever accomplished. An NBA players poll conducted over the All-Star break this year revealed Jordan was their choice for the league's top defender, beating out the Lakers' Michael Cooper. Well, the Bulls led the league in one category last year ? t you guessed it, team defense. I Of course, those who claim allqgiance to Bird or Magic don't i want to hear about defense any more i than I want to hear about world titles. They prefer to characterize Jordan as "the one-man team." These members of the Bird and ; Magic faithful are always launching such classic statements as "Jordan wouldn't score 35 points a game if he played for the Celtics or Lakers." Holding back a grin, 1 usually respond that I would hope he wouldn't have to. In fact, those who really follow Jordan know nothing would make him happier than having less scoring responsibilities. He would be free to concentrate even more on other aspects of his game. Hypothetically speaking, wouldn't it be interesting to consider Magic filling Jordan's famous Nikes? (1 know Magic wears Converse; don't be picky.) It's a safe bet that only Magic's whining would increase the first game he-got on the break and saw Dave Corzine filling the lane instead of James Worthy. However, no scenarios like these are fair to the players involved. That's why I feel the question ultimately comes down to who has the most individual credentials, and for my money, it's today's most complete player ? Michael Jordan. Magic Johnson himself once admitted, "Really, there's Michael, and then there's everyone else." Well said. (Editor's note: Since this column was written, Magic Johnson has returned to the Lakers' lineup.) NT KEN LPT. Ml SAVE LIVES. 5DOES.
