Thomas drove in four runs on three hits, and Rountree scattered seven hits and struck out 11 Eagles in eight innings as USC improved its record to 1-1. Rountree had a shaky start as Winthrop, playing in its season opener, took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Eagle second baseman Steve Oaks singled on Rountree's first pitch, advanced to second on a walk and scored when USC centerfielder Mike McGee bobbled a single by Ryan Scott. But the lead didn't last long, as the Gamecocks scored four runs in the bottom half of the first on a runscoring single by Lee Nichols and a bases-loaded double by Thomas. In the third inning, Thomas struck again. The USC leftfielder led off with a single, moved to second on a walk, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on second baseman Mark Taylor's sacrifice fly, giving the Gamecocks a 5-1 lead. The Eagles closed the gap to 5-2 in the top of the seventh inning on a double by Ron Schick and a Rountree wild pitch before USC closed out the scoring in their half of the seventh on a RBI single by Thomas.
