Lady Ga By BOB ZAFFRANN Staff writer The USC women's basketball team steamrolled over an overmatched Louisville squad Saturday afternoon at Carolina Coliseum with a combination of strong inside play and perimeter shooting. The 89-59 win improved the 18thranked Lady Gamecocks' record on the season to 18-5 and 9-1 in the Metro, while the Ladv Cardinals dropped to 4-19 and 0-8. USC built their lead gradually and methodically in the first half, led by 6'3" center Schonna Banner, who was a perfect 5-5 from the floor and totaled 11 points in the period. Karen Middleton came off the bench early and gave the Lady Gamecocks their first double-digit lead at 26-14 with 10:30 remaining on her first of six 3-pointers. Martha Parker dished out five assists and added 10 points, and sophomore forward Beverly Hawkins scored eight in a reserve role. fn short,- everything was working for USC, who led 50-32 at the half. At halftime, Sheila Foster, the Lady Gamecocks' all-time leading scorer and rebounder, was presented her retired no. 53 jersey by USC President James Holderman in a ceremony marking alumni day. There was also a Lady Gamecock old-timers game before the main contest. After the intermission, Louisville head coach Peggy Fiehrer, in an attempt to slow the pace of the game, switched her team to a zone defense. Her strategy worked for a while as USC struggled to make the adjustment, and a 3-pointer by Louisville guard Tuonisia Turner cut the lead to 58-41 with 13:15 left. That was as close as the Lady Cardinals would get. Six starters from last year's team, which set a school record with 47 victories and finished the season ranked No. 9 in the country, return for the Lady Gamecocks. Three of the returnees, sophomore center fielder Tricia Popowski, sophomore Michelle Delloso at second base and senior shortstop Marianne DiRupo, were named to the 1988 All-South Region team. Even though Popowski, Delloso and DiRupo will be looked to for leadership during the season, other players may also emerge in that role. "Other players can surface once we start playing," said USC head coach Joyce Compton. "You can see other people who aren't captains be models as well." Compton is entering her third season as head coach of the Lady Gamecocks. In those two seasons, Compton has compiled an 81-28 record (a .743 winning percentage), and she has a lifetime record of 289-124. In 13 years of coaching at Mattatuck Community College, the University of Missouri and USC, Compton has never experienced a losing season. Sophomore Angie Lear will provide USC with some experience in the pitching department. "Karen Middleton's 3-pointers added a lot of excitement and also helped us to build up a comfortable lead," Wilson said. In the hitting area, the Lady Gamecocks will look to Popowski, Delloso and DiRupo to lead the way. Popowski had the second-highest batting average and on-base percentage on the team last year as a freshman with a .351 batting average and a .464 on-base percentage. Popowski also led the team in doubles, triples and stolen bases last season. Delloso finished the 1988 season with a .301 batting average, and DiRupo batted .303, while leading uic icam wiui a .<4/z on-oase percentage. The toughness of the schedule should prepare the Lady Gamecocks for postseason play, Compton said. "We face a good mixture of Top 20 teams," she said. "We are playing the people we need to play to accomplish our goal (a berth in the NCAA national tournament). Last year's Lady Gamecock squad was knocked out in the regional tournament after suffering two losses to the University of Arizona. This year's team is ranked 19th in the nation in the preseason poll and third in the South Region. USC will begin its 1989 campaign Monday when they travel to Chapel Hill to face the University of North Carolina. The Lady Gamecocks will not have a home match until March 21, when they play host to UNCCharlottc. "If I'm not mistaken, they haven't lost a game down there. It's a tough place to play." Price, now a sophomore, also led USC in Saturday's win over the Golden Eagles by scoring a team high of 18 points, including three 3-pointers. But the biggest shot of the day might have come from Price's ailing backcourt mate Barry Manning. With 2:44 remaining and USC up by only two, Manning ? who had been sick just minutes before ? banked a 3-point shot off the glass with the 45-second shot clock running out, giving USC a five-point lead and sealing the Gamecocks' first-ever victory at Southern Miss.
