Gamecocks sig By KEVIN ADAMS Sports editor Despite the sudden death Sunday night of head football Coach Joe Morrison, USC signed 17 high school players to letters-of-intent Wednesday and Thursday. "From the looks of things," said USC recruiting coordinator Charlie Lyle, "we've helped ourselves in some areas where we had specific needs. We have signed some quality players who we believe can come in and compete tor us early in their careers." Fourteen of the 17 players were from out-of-state, including highly recruited quarterback Lance Harp of Franklin, Ohio. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Harp was allstate, a USA Today honorable mention All-American and was named Ohio Co-Back of the Year. Harp's father, Larry, was a quarterback from 1959-63 at Morrison's alma mater, the University of Cincinnati. Harp was one of six quarterbacks signed by the Gamecocks in an effort to replace quarterback Todd Ellis, who will be a senior next season. Five recruits that, had verbally committed to USC reportedly changed their minds after the death of Morrison. USC Athletic Director King Dixon, who was placed in charge of recruiting after Morrison's death, said he was pleased with the overall class of recruits, especially considering the circumstances. "We've certainly had quite a challenging year with our s football program," Dixon said. "We are pleased with the J quality of the prospects that we have signed thus far." "Due to our period of transition," Dixon said, "there have been some of those we were counting on coming ! (here) that have made decisions to go elsewhere, and that's understandable. Dawson leads FSU, 88-72 From staff reports USC's recent luck at the Leon County Civic Center ran out ' Wednesday when 12th-ranked Florida State pummeled the Gamecocks for an 88-72 Metro Conference win. USC had w on two of the past three and five of the past seven on FSU's home court. The Seminoles had defeated USC 69-67 in Columbia less than, two weeks earlier. With the loss, USC dropped to 13-7 overall and 3-3 in the Metro. The Gamecocks will travel to Memphis, Tenn., on Saturday to face Memphis State in a Metro Conference matchup.
