Clemson earlier los By JEFF NICHOLS Staff writer Whoever said you can't go home again has never been to Littlejohn Coliseum. Sure, the Clemson University basketball team that defeated USC 78-65 Saturday night has made great strides since suffering a 20-point loss to the Gamecocks back on Dec. 3. But to say the 11,500 fans who jammed into Littlejohn ? including the students just a short bounce pass ana) 11 win nit ?jia.y nig, i IUUI uun I deserve a lot of credit for Clemson's victory is to ignore the truth. Clemson head coach Cliff Ellis knows the fans are important and relies on them. With the Tigers enjoying a comfortable margin in the second half, Ellis turned from coach to cheerleader. His orange jacket long since removed, Ellis began waving his arms continually in an effort to make sure the crowd ignored the scoreboard and kept up their fever pitch. He had a couple of reasons for concern. After a highly emotional home win over No. 3 North Carolina three days earlier, Ellis wanted to make sure his Tigers stayed pumped from start to finish. "With the lead tonight, I just felt a little staleness," Ellis said, "i think we we were a little flat." Also, two months was not long enough to erase from his memory a rowdy Carolina Coliseum audience and a 17-0 second half opening spurt used to put Clemson away. "I was in Columbia two months ago," Ellis said. "They were 15 up, and we couldn't call a play. I wanted to make sure that our fans got our players into it, and they did a good job." So Ellis didn't mind when his players asked if they could don the all-orange uniforms for the first time since the USC game two years ago. It seemed the players hadn't forgotten what happened two months ago. Revenge came without much of a struggle as Clemson, 14-5, relied on strong inside play and poor Gamecock shooting to spark a running attack in handing USC, 12-6, its third straight loss. "I thought the running game was the biggest significant factor," Ellis said. Freshman forward Joe Rhett and sophomore point guard Brent Price came out in the opening minutes playing like they were out to put a stop to Clemson's 11 straight victories over USC at home. Clemson then went on a 14-2 run over the next ten minutes to open up a 27-14 margin with 6:56 remaining. Price hit a 12-footer to cut the lead to six points at 27-21, but that's as close as the Gamecocks would come the rest of the way. Clemson led 40-29 at the half and went into the lockeroom confident there would be no repeat of USC's second-half torrid start that had taken place in Columbia two months earlier. The Tigers had reason to be confident, considering they built their lead with leading scorer, center Elden Campbell, scoring only two points in the first half. Campbell came out firing in the second half scoring 15 points to finish in a tie for scoring honors with forwards Derrick Forrest and Dale Davis, who all had 17 points. Guard Marion Cash added 12 points for the Tigers. Clemson's largest lead was 74-51 with 5:03 remaining, but USC finished strong ? going on a 14-4 run capped off by baskets from seniors John Breckenridge and Bill Vernau for the final 13-point margin. Price led USC with 14 points, despite special abuse given to him by the Clemson crowd each time he touched the ball. Joe Rhett added 12 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. USC shot 43 percent from the field compared to 53 percent shooting for Clemson. USC now returns home for a Metro Conference matchup tonight with Southern Mississippi. Game time is 7:30.
