We don't know how long the virus has been here or what it could do," Morton said. Morton said there are several types of computer viruses. The first type, known as a "worm," is the most deadly type, Morton said. "It can get into your hard disk, and, like a worm, eat and destroy your programs and memory until the system comes crashing down." A second type is also very serious and is known as "scores." "This type of virus can cause programs to bomb," he said. "Another type similar to 'scores,' but less deadly ? and this is what I think has happened at USC ? is called an NVIR virus. It is more of a nuisance. This virus i* costing us more time than anything else," Morton said. Morton said he does not know how the computer virus started at USC, but speculated that it was probably brought in unintentionally on someone's disk who used an infected computer over Christmas break. Morton said CDS has two pro grams to combat this particular strain of virus. The programs include RX1.4, which acts a prescription to cure the virus, and the FERRET, which, as the name implies, "ferrets" out viruses. Copies of these programs are free and available to users who think their computers have been infected by the virus. "If you have used your personal disk in an infected computer at USC, you may have carried the virus home to your own hard drive or personal computer," Kinzley said. Clemson has also had several problems with the more serious type of computer virus. The virus, which was first detected in the fall, has caused systems and programs to crash, said Mike McCaun, Clemson Microcenter assistant manager. The virus has also infected mainly their Macintosh computers. "But if you detect the virus early enough, you can prevent any major damage to your system," McCann said. iTvl AWESOME H \J m J) .
