Classic at The Graveyard.
The Stanford Cardinals, the Indiana
Hoosiers, the Air Force
Falcons and USC were the four
teams participating in the two-day
event.
The fans were treated to two overtime
matches, which ended in ties as
the talent was evenly matched this
year. Only Air Force lost matches in
the tournament.
Match one, on Saturday, pitted Indiana
against Stanford. Defense
dominated the game, with neither
team scoring in regulation or the two
overtimes.
Saturday's second match saw USC
take on Air Force. John Joust put the
Falcons on the board first at the
14:35 mark in the first half when he
took a pass from teammate Chris
Foster and drove it in the goal.
The Gamecocks evened the score
with 11:03 gone in the second half.
Billy McMullan threw the ball to Pat
Walsh, who in turn sent it to Phil
Seidenburg. Seidenburg put a shot
past the keeper to record the goal, tying
the score.
USC scored the winning goal with
7:20 left in the match off a free kick
rrom midheld. Jen Love crossed the
ball to Walsh, who headed it to Jonas
Gudjonnson. Gudjonnson drove a
header into the net for the win.
In the first match Sunday, Air
Force took on Stanford. The first
half was a defensive struggle for both
teams as they tried to find their
rhythm.
A one minute letdown in the second
half by the Air Force defense
cost the Falcons the match. Stanklnkot

ford's Chris Porch scored two goals,
one with 20:01 remaining and the
other with 19:05 remaining in the second
half, to secure the win.
Sunday's second game matched
No. 7 USC against No. 8 Indiana.
The Gamecocks struck first at the
z^-mmuie marie 01 tne nrst nair.
USC's Mike Gosselin drilled a shot
off a Hoosier defender Pat Walsh,
shot the rebound, and it too was
deflected. Finally, off the second
deflection, Phil Sidenburg found the
goal open for the score.
With 32:42 gone in the half,
Hoosier Ken Snow tied the match.
On a pass from Michael Correia,
Snow looped the ball into the upper
right hand corner of the goal.
The Gamecocks had several opportunities
to score again, but the Indiana
goalkeeper, Juergen Sommer,
made several saves to keep the match
a 1-1 tie after double overtime.
The final standings of the tournament
were: Stanford 1-0-1, USC
1-0-1, Indiana 0-0-2, and Air Force
0-2-0. By using a tie-breaking system
based on goal differential, Stanford
was declared the winner of this year's
Met Life Classic and USC was the g
runner-up.
The All-Tournament Team ,
selected by the coaches to the 1988
Met Life Classic Team were from Air
Force, Chris Foster and Glenn Melia;
from Indiana, Juergen Sommer, Ken
Snow and Han Roest; from (JSC,
Scott Henderson, Tommy Loeber
and Mike Gosselin: from Stanford,
Chris Porch and Luke Garrott.
USC's Seidenburg was named the
tournament's most valuable player
on offense, and Stanford's Semioli

valuable player. L
