Honors ranks air ir By DAVID EATON Staff writer The South Carolina Honors College once again is the subject of ' praise. The honors college was listed in Martin Nemko's new book, How to v Get an Ivv Leaeue Education at a State University. The honors college provides an Ivy League education at affordable prices, the book said. The SCC, along with three other South Carolina colleges and universities, was praised as being among the leading public institutions in the United States. Honors students are not only provided with "a dynamic educational experience but are offered a breadth of other opportunities" afforded to them by the larger university community, said William Mould, SCC master. Mould said being an Ivy League look-alike was never a goal of the honors program. "However, if Ivy League means having a good, strong educational structure, that has been our goal. That is what we have." The honors college may even have some advantages over the real Ivy League institutions, Mould said. Students receive more individual attention, this made possible by the comparatively smaller size of the college to its private counterparts. University Provost Arthur Smith said he "certainly" agrees the education at the South Carolina College is comparable to Ivy League institutions." "I am glad to see that a high quality education is not limited to eight or nine institutions in the United States," Smith said. SCC students themselves seemed to be impressed with the college. "I feel it's equivalent to an Ivy League education," said Donna Yates, a SCC math education senior. "Money for, It putting in electric doors or redoing restrooms has to be squeezed out of the budget, or additional funding might have to be requested. The president's office has been very cooperative in this respect." jt The driving force behind all the changes is the committee, which consists of about 10 to 12 people who are appointed through the president's office based on previous service and recommendations, he said. In 1987-88, honors students had an average SAT score of 1264, higher than that of both Brown and Cornell universities. The typical honors student ranked in the top 2.5 percent of his graduating class, placing SCC among the nation's top one percent. Honor students are involved in the mainstream of university activity, taking 50 to 70 Dercent of their course work within the program of general studies, Mould said. The students are encouraged to utilize all the facilities which the university has to offer. For the most part, students do feel as if they are a part of USC. "You can get involved in whatever you want to," Yates said. "Sometimes you really have to make an effort to become involved," said Maria Schultz, a SCC government and international studies senior. Not only do the students involve themselves in mainstream USC, so do their teachers. In fact, those professors who teach honor classes, in all likelihood, teach a greater number of general courses within USC; thus, all of USC benefits from the presence of the honors program, Mould said. Unlike many students who are lost in "plantation-sized lecture halls," SCC students sit in classes that average only 15 to 20 people, Nemko said. The students are also allowed a greater amount of academic freedom when designing their program of studies and may even "forgo a major, in exchange for becoming wellrounded." "One of the main reasons I chose USC is the honors college," Schultz said. "The main goal of the South Carolina College is to provide instate students with the finest education possible," Mould said. d from page 1 were sent back to the athletic department. The committee tries to increase positive awareness in the nonhandicapped population, said Danny Baker, assistant vice president of Law Enforcement and Safety. "We still have a long way to go, but 1 can see that awareness is increasing," Baker said. iver leave our sight. OFF R PRICE ON OR (E-6) SLIDE JUST ONE >unt with ID Good oupon) . This CO by Unc. "The people that were there were diverse individuals," he said. "There were democrats and republicans, men and women, people of different ethnic and racial backgrounds. "It was a mixture, a melting pot of leaders in the state of South Carolina, and those people that were there were progressive-minded people. And if that is any indication of our future, we have a very bright future, indeed." Franklin said his perspective as a student and as student government president at USC ? South Carolina's largest university ? was important so the concerns of students could be represented at the assembly. He was the only student body president and undergraduate student to be selected to serve on the assembly. Education and drugs emerged as the most important issues at the assembly meeting, he said. "Out of the assembly, we showed the need for South Carolina to be tough on drugs so drug traffickers won't come out and feel they have a free, open market here. They don't need to feel it's open season in South Carolina. "Secondly, 1 was concerned about higher education. 1 pushed for and proposed that high institutions of learning be fully funded through the full formula," he said. The formula is used by the state to determine the minimum amount of funds needed by colleges and universities to operate. Last year. Franklin said, USC did not receive full funding. USC and other state colleges only received 93 percent of full-formula funding from the Commission on Higher Education, he said. iat wasn't Born in Jerusalem, A wad came in 1969 to the United States, where he ?n gained studied psychology, He became a aid.
