Alright, alright, what can I say? I
picked Georgia over my very own
school, and my very own school
creamed, no, ran over, no, demolished,
Georgia, 23-10.
Sorry, guys.
But let's look at the bright side. I
did say that USC would score 23
points. I just overestimated the
Bulldogs' score by a couple of
touchdowns.
It seems I have several options
after this debacle.
i. ciaim temporary insanity.
< 2. Claim that Joe Lee Dunn
reproduced my column to 50 times its
normal size, pasted it all over the
Gamecock locker room and used it to
, motivate his defense to play one of
1 their best games ever. (I like that
| one.)
3. Vow to pick the Gamecocks in
every other game this season ? this is
the most likely alternative.
4. Pick Florida State and Clemson
over USC, in hopes that the trend of
blowing the big games continues, and
that my picks against USC continue
to inspire Dunn and his defense. (See
No. 2.)
For the week, the record was a
paltry 14-6, a .700 percentage. One
of the wins, however, was the upset
special, as The Citadel beat Navy,
42-35.
For the season, the record is 30-8,
a percentage of .789.

SEOUL ? Once more for the medal, Mary.
Mary Decker Slaney, the quintessential hard-luck story
,vho trips over the very word Olympics, earned one more
:hance Thursday by qualifying for the final of the
women's 1,500-meter run.
Slaney, who faded to 10th in the 3,000 meter Sunday
ifter leading two-thirds of the race, ran a hesitant second
n her 1,500 semifinal heat, finishing in 4 minutes, 3.61
seconds.
The top five in each heat qualified for Friday afterloon's
final.
Slaney admitted she was scared of falling.
Understandable.
It was Mary who stumbled and fell in the 3,000 meters
it I.os Angeles in the 1984 Olympics after tripping over
tier South African rival, Zola Budd.

It was Mary who stumbled and aggravated a minor calf
injury in a 3,000 qualifying heat in Seoul.
It was Mary who stumbled in the 3,000 final in Seoul,
albeit after she had fallen out of contention.
"I know that as a seasoned athlete I shouldn't be worrying
about those things," she said, "but I don't know,
it's something about the Olympics."
Slaney had never run the 1,500 in the Olympics but
decided to try it after her disappointment in the 3,000. She
had led about 2,000 meters of that race, setting a worldrecord
pace on the first lap, so she figured the 1,500 just
might be the elusive medal.
"I just don't run in packs enough to know how to get
out of it," Slaney said. "In the final, I'm going to have to
come up with something different to keep from getting
stuck on the pole."
