use sn Georgia By KEVIN ADAMS Sports editor Saturday's USC-Georgia football game started somewhat auspiciously for the Gamecock defense. On the first play from scrimmage, Georgia fullback Alphonso Ellis ran off-tackle for a 27-yard gain, carrying the sixth-ranked Bulldogs into USC territory. After reaching the Gamecock 36-yard line, Georgia had four consecutive running plays that netted gains of six, six, five and seven yards and took the Bulldogs down to the USC 12-yard line ? not the way the USC defense wanted to start the game, especially against the top rushing team in the nation. The Gamecocks, however, did stiffen before allowing Bulldog placekicker Steve Crumley to come in and kick a 27-yard field goal, giving Georgia a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs wouldn't score again until 32 seconds remained in the game. By that time, the Gamecocks were up by 20 points and the USC defense had totally shut down the Georgia running attack, limiting the Bulldogs to 102 yards on the ground, en route to a 23-10 Gamecock victory. That's the same Georgia rushing attack that had averaged 355 yards in the Bulldogs' first three games. Tailbacks Tim Worley and Rodney Hampton, who had combined for an average of 270 yards in Georgia's first three wins, only had 52 yards between them, 45 by Worley. Hampton had only seven yards, far below his 125-yard average. Simply put, the Gamecock defense was magnificent and solidified its nositinn ac nnp nf the nation's top defensive squads. "I knew we could do it," said senior defensive tackle Derrick Frazier. "It was just a matter of us . . . going out and playing together, hustling, running to the ball and gang tackling. "Once the offense scored . . . the defense knew it was up to us now, because we couldn't lose unless the defensfmessed up." > They didn't. The offense wasn't bad, either. Quarterback Todd Ellis had 28 completions in 43 attempts and threw for 321 yards and a ! touchdown. Freshman wide receiver 1 Robert Brooks caught the i touchdown pass from Ellis and had a total of eight receptions for 98 yards. i Brooks caught two touchdowns last J week against East Carolina. And ? don't forget sophomore placekicker \ Collin Mackie, who had field goals 1 of 23, 42 and 43 yards. After the game, USC head coach J Joe Morrison spoke of Ellis' poise in a leading the Gamecock offense. "He not only threw the ball well, I j thought he did an excellent job at the 2 line of scrimmage and running the ] football team," said Morrison. "He J does have a lot of confidence ... in the offense, he knows how to execute it . . . he's just had a fine fall so far, really in all of our ball games." After Crumley's field goal gave Georgia, now 3-1, the short-lived 3-0 lead, the Gamecocks drove to the Georgia six-yard line. After three incomplete passes, Mackie came on to kick a 23-yarder and tie the game, 3-3. The field goal by Mackie was his 14th in a row and established a USC record for consecutive field goals made. While the USC defense continued to shut the Bulldog offensive attack down, the Gamecocks once again drove to the Bulldog five-yard line. This time senior fullback Keith Bing bulled over on third-and-goal, giving the Gamecocks a 10-3 lead with 8:09 remaining in the second quarter. The touchdown drive was aided by several penalties against the Bulldog defense and a 21-yard pass from Ellis to sophomore receiver Carl Piatt. The Gamecock defense once again held, and on USC's next drive, Ellis fired eight straight completions, the a last a 36-yard touchdown to Brooks with 1:48 left in the half. USC carried "i a 17-3 lead into the half. The second half was more of the J same. Georgia never got into any kind of rhythm on offense, due most- B ly to the nlav of the IJSC defenders. Si Mackie kicked field goals of 42 and 43 yards to give the Gamecocks their ly only second-half points. Georgia tf scored its only touchdown on a short touchdown run by fullback Keith 3( Henderson with :32 on the clock. n< "I think every once in a while, you ec have a ballgame where you're just ex- re tremely proud of your young men, and we're very proud of our players pc and the way they performed today. m . . . Brooks has started in every game this season, scoring his first two touchdowns against East Carolina last week. "... if they decided to redshirt me, it wouldn't be a letdown," said Brooks. "I think it's great. I'm a freshman, I'm starting. My first touchdown was 97 yards, a school record. You couldn't be unhappy with that." Ellis said he is impressed with the performances of the younger players, but with Brooks in particular. "I've known all along that these guys have great hands and athletic ability," Ellis said. "But to talk about moving into a major college program like this and playing the people that we play, that doesn't happen very often."
