?????? Pep Tall By Kevin Adams Georgia game mostly imp lea* Ah, the Georgia game. It's finally here. It's what Gamecock fans everywhere have been waiting for, and it's finally here. USC has disposed of the rest of the Carolinas ? North, Western and East ? and can now focus its full and undivided attention on the sixth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. They'd better, because Georgia has perhaps its best team since the early 1980s. That's saying a lot. From 1980-83, the Bulldogs were 43-4-1, winning the national championship in 1980 and finishing in the Top 10 each of the other years. And while the record has fallen a little in the last four seasons, the Bulldogs have still managed to defeat USC the last three times they've played. Since 1979, Georgia has won seven of the eight games between the two schools; overall, they lead the series 33-7-2. Obviously, the Georgia game has always been a frustrating one for USC. It's also one that usually sets the tone for the rest of the Gamecock season. Let's take a little trip down memory lane. . . To 1980, when USC traveled to Athens with a 6-1 record, a Top 20 ranking and eventual Heisman n??? IIU|JIIJ niuiici UCUI^C IXUgCI1 lie Bulldogs were 7-0 and on their way to the national title. They almost lost it against the Gamecocks. USC was driving for the winning touchdown in the last few minutes of the game until Rogers fumbled inside the Bulldog 20-yard line. Georgia recovered, ran out the clock and kept its perfect record intact with a 13-10 victory. Instead of moving into the Top 10, USC fell in the polls and finished 8-4, with losses in its final two games to Clemson and Gator Bowl opponent Pittsburgh. A good season, to be sure, by Gamecock standards. But not as good as it might have been had they defeated the Bulldogs. To 1986, at Williams-Brice Stadium. USC was 1-2, having lost to Miami and Virginia. Georgia was 1-1 and coming off a loss at home to Clemson. Despite being heavy underdogs, the Gamecocks played well and were once again driving inside the Georgia 20-yard line in the final minutes when a pass from freshman quarterback Todd Ellis bounced off the shoulder pads of usually-reliable junior wide receiver Sterling Sharpe. Gamecocks coi By the Associated Press ATHENS, Ga. ? Georgia football Coach Vince Dooley started his No. 6 Bulldogs' preparation for No. 14 South Carolina Monday by saying his team was badly bruised following Saturday's 42-35 victory over Mississippi State. He said offensive assistant Ray Goff, a former coach at South Carolina, would give his team a full report on the Gamecocks, saying he "is better qualified to give the report than anyone on our staff." That one play stunned the Gamecocks, and they never recovered, suffering several more heartbreaking defeats and finishing with a disappointing 3-6-2 record. To 1987, in Athens. The Gamecocks were 2-0, the Bulldogs 1-1 and again coming off a tough loss to Clemson. It was USC's first true test of the season after lopsided victories over Division I-AA opponents Appalachian State and Western Carolina. The Gamecocks were confident of victory, feeling they were the better team. USC had 374 yards of total offense and drove inside the Georgia 15-yard line five times, only to come away with two Collin Mackie field goals. The freshman Mackie missed field goals of 46 and 27 yards, and sophomore running back Harold Green fumbled inside the Georgia five-yard line to thwart Gamecock scoring opportunities. Final score: Georgia 13, USC 6. For once, however, the Gamecocks did recover somewhat from the loss to the Bulldogs, going on to post an 8-4 record and a top 15 finish. The lone exception in this string of frustration: 1984. This was the year of Black Magic, and it all started against the Bulldogs in WilliamsBrice Stadium. USC had posted wins over patsies The Citadel and Duke, but the win over Georgia was the one that catapulted the Gamecocks into the national spotlight and set the foundation for the best season in school history. The 17-10 win over the Bulldogs was keyed by a secondhalf, 62-yard touchdown pass by reserve quarterback Mike Hold. The win against a team that had beaten them so often in the past gave the Gamecocks increased confidence in themselves and laid the groundwork for a 10-2 season which saw the Gamecocks reach No. 2 in the national polls. What will this year's game against the Bulldogs hold? Will it be like 1984 or more like '80, '85 and '86? Will the outcome affect the rest of the Gamecock season as dramatically as it has in the past? For answers to these questions and others like them, tune in Saturday afternoon. icern Dooley He said the Gamecocks are an early two-point favorite in the game, and added, "considering the way we played on Saturday, there's not a question as to why we are the underdog." "We are going to reconstruct this week, and it's going to be a challenge," he said. "We will have to do a better job against South Carolina than we did against the other two teams who have thrown against us, Tennessee and Mississippi State," Dooley said.
