Stepping in for the injured starters were Mike Dingle and Gerald Williams, who together rushed 42 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns. He ran hard and caught the ball well," head coach Joe Morrison said. "He's a fine athlete that's been away from the game for a while, but the more he plays, the better he'll get." Dingle was ineligible last year after he failed to meet academic requirements. "Gerald Williams had a fine performance this evening," Morrison said. "He is as solid a running back as you will find." "I came in late and had to learn the system," Williams said. "The line and the backs have been pushing me to improve." Wiiliams said he was thrilled about his touchdown. "Oh, it was great. Everything was going through my mind. I waved to my momma, and she waved back. It was a thrill to score, and it's what I've been looking for," Williams said. The Gamecocks appear to be in good shape; their young backs are receiving quality experience. When USC plays the tougher teams on its schedule, fatigue or injury shouldn't be a problem in the backfield, Williams said. "We have quite a few quality running backs so when one goes down, another can come in, and the team won't suffer." Injury update: USC's football team, despite an easy 38-0 victory over Western Carolina Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium, came out of the contest with several notable injuries. The most serious is the dislocated elbow suffered by senior defensive end Kevin Hendrix. Hendrix will be out six to eight weeks. Other players injured against the Catamounts and their injuries are running back Mike Dingle (bruised lower leg), noseguard Kurt Wilson (sprained ankle), center Randy Harwell (bruised shoulder), quarterback Dickie DeMasi (bruised shoulder), wide receiver George Rush (bruised shoulder), and offensive tackle Ike Harris (sore back). All are expected to play in this Saturday's contest against East Carolina, although DeMasi and Harwell are on a day-to-day basis. Running backs Keith Bing and Harold Green, injured in USC's season-opening victory against Nortn Carolina, are also expected to play.
