The stifling USC defense pressured Catamount quarterback Todd Cottrell and forced the punt early in the game. "We put pressure on the quarterback and kept him out of his rhythm," head coach Joe Morrison said. "Anytime you shut a ball club out, you have to have a pretty good defensive performance." With 17 seconds left to play in the first quarter, Williams ran nine yards for a touchdown. After the kick, USC led 10-0. The score was the first of his college career. On the night, he rushed 18 times for 108 yards. Defensive tackle Marty Dye recovered a Western Carolina fumble on the Catamounts' 46. After a 27-yard pass from Ellis to Hardin Brown, USC was in position for Dingle to dive four yards for a touchdown. "You can't look at games and say they're going to be easy. Anybody can beat any given opponent on any given day," Dingle said. "As far as the first touchdown goes, it felt great." With 10:39 left to go in the third quarter, Dingle caught an Ellis pass and was tackled inside the 1-yard line. Dingle took it in for a touchdown on the next play. With 4:47 left in the third quarter, USC's Patrick Hinton intercepted a pass. At the 2:44 mark, Ellis found wide receiver Carl Piatt on a 12-yard pass play for a touchdown. The final score of the game came at the 9:20 mark in the fourth quarter when Albert Haynes ran seven yards for a touchdown. USC outrushed Western Carolina 256 yards on 59 carries to 34 yards on 24 carries. Ellis had 13 completions in 19 attempts for 187 yards and no interceptions. Western Carolina completed less than half of their passes for only 89 yards. In total yards, USC topped Western Carolina 452-123. Next week, USC will face East Carolina University at home. East Tennessee will visit Western Carolina.
