Graduat By DAC CARVER Staff writer In an age of modernization, commercialization and rapid change, two recent graduates of USC hope to preserve a little of the past. Heritage Preservation Associates inc., iounaea oy t^nip Bennett ana Catherine Richardson in February, is set up to determine the historical value of buildings and property. The impetus for their consultng firm began with a historical study for the Santee-Cooper Corporation on the Santee Canal. Such studies are the foundation of their newly formed business that conducts research for individuals, corporations and communities. During their study of the Santee Canal, which in the 18th and 19th centuries was a major channel for boats shipping cotton to the Lowcountry from the Midlands, Bennett and Richardson developed a social history of the plantation life that Dementia ? South Carolina is not the first state with an interest in a dementia registry, Sayetta said. Two other registries are already in operation with population statistics in New York and Florida. South Carolina will be the third. "A building should be preserved if it has been associated with a historical person, exhibits historical style or is a part of a collection of buildings in a historic community," Bennett said. "Some buildings are worth saving. Some aren't worth saving," Richardson said. "Let's be sure we know before we tear them down." Although the firm of Bennett and Richardson is the only one in Columbia on such a professional level, the field of historical preservationists is growing. Many fellow history students in preservation have had their interest sparked by Bennett and Richardson. But many more people should be concerned about the historical importance of their communities, they said.
