Picking fT Your JC% Notes Bill Sengstacken ? I'm quite certain if it weren't for music I would have losfmy mind this summer. I spent it living and working in Myrtle Beach. Let it suffice to say that I now hate tourists. But enough of that. VIUWUCU 11UU3C CUlillilUCS LU nilpress with Temple of Low Men (Capitol Records). After the brush with success the band had with their self-titled debut, Crowded House writes not of the joys of being rich and famous but the pain derived from it. As leader Neil Finn writes in "Mansion in the Slums": "I wish I was a million miles away/ from the manager's door/ there is trouble at the bank." That attitude sums up the feel of this pensive work. But the anguish doesn't inspire a deep blue funk on the part of the listener; rather it encourages a sense of empathy for the band. . .an excellent record. Not quite so good is the latest from Shriekback, Go Bang! (Island Records). To be fair, if any other band had released this disc, I'd probably like it better. Shriekback has a penchant for recording sinfully beautiful dance music, but with enough thoughtful vocal doodling to give your brain something to do as well. At least that's what they did on the 1985 masterwork Oil and Gold. Here there seems to be a concerted effort to issue a "hit record." This album reeks of the big sell out, right down to the INXS carbon copy cover. They even do a version of K. C. and the QnnchinA R o * * A ' c 6 * Hot ?^Uiuiiiuv uuiiu a VJVl L/UW1I Tonight." But the worst of it is the title track. Keep in mind this is a band that traditionally hides the true meaning of a song under a delightful mask of allusion and allegory. I ask you, what kind of meaning is hidden in a chorus that reads, "Everybody here, everybody here everybody here GO 3 BANG"? " *' To their credit, they get high marks j for the closing track, "Dust and Shadow," a direct throwback to Oil and Gold's "This Big Hush." Based solely on the existence of this song, I won't trash my copy of the record. _ Just think, if you buy Oil and Gold instead, you'll never have that problem. Clearly, the debut album of the year belongs to Tracy Chapman. Chapman's self-titled album (Electra Records) burst on the scene just as the spring semester was drawing to a close, and I was unable to issue a B suitable prose drool for the disc. Let st me set the matter right once and for all. pi Every song on the album is great. in No lie. Chapman has been compared to Bob Dylan and Joan Ar- Ji matraamg, out neither label really c\ fits. She sings of social injustice, but A she does so in a warm, almost cc homespun way. Her songs are incredibly mature. Reminding yourself that this is her 01 first release takes some effort, but it l can be done. The lyrics draw some of w the greatest pictures in my mind. For p( example the first single, "Fast Car," Sl offers the wonderful line, "I remember we were driving in your di car/ The speed so fast I felt like I was m drunk." It will give you chills. Judy Garland portrays a rebellious teen growing up in Kansas during the boring '30s in this classic movie.
