Felton reveal t 1 ' I recruits Yug( By BOBBY JONES Cnnrtc aHitnr ^|#VI lO VU1IUI The upcoming basketball schedule and the recruitment of two Yugoslavian players were the subject of an announcement by George Felton, USC's men's head basketball coach, last week. Felton is pleased with the upcoming Gamecock schedule. The 27-game schedule, includes matches with Metro, Atlantic Coast, Southeastern and Big Ten Conference teams. The season will begin Saturday, Nov. 26 at Carolina Coliseum, following exhibition games against Bracknell of England and Athletes in Action. The Gamecocks will face Lander in the Frank McGuire Arena for their first game. December proves to be a tight schedule for the team which posted a 19-10 record last season. USC will play host to Clemson, Maryland, East Carolina and Ohio State. ESPN will broadcast the Ohio State game on Dec. 20. USC will participate in the Cotton States Classic, held at the Omni in Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 29-30. Georgia, LaSalle, and Princeton will complete the field. The Metro Conference Tournament will conclude a tQugh, 12-game Metro schedule the Gamecocks face in January and February. As Felton begins his third year as head coach, USC comes off a two-year probation handed down by the f NCAA during the summer of 1986. Charges arose from recruiting violations and ticket selling before Felton was hired and the resulting investigation leveled the penalty which banned post-season play by the Gamecocks. Following the graduation of Terry Gould, Kevin Hoffman, Darryl Martin, Tony Shaw and the absence of Perry Dozier and Smith, Felton will look to the bench for talent and leadership. Coming off the bench for the Gamecocks will be Jeff Roulston, a 6-11, 240-pound sophomore from Summerville who was redshirted during his freshman season and forward John Hudson who saw limited playing time last season. Guard Brent Price will also return to attack opponents with his three point expertise. Felton's teams in 1986-87 and 1987-88 advanced to the semifinals of the Metro Conference Tournament, a feat which no other coach accomplished. : . . Under his direction, Gamecock teams have made steady improvements. It was at Georgia Tech that Felton earned a national reputation as a top recruiter. He recruited Haiti native Yvon Joseph away from Miami Dade Junior College to play for the Yellow Jackets. Felton's recruiting season peaked last week with the final confirmation that Obrad Ignjatovic and Bojan Popovic would be allowed to come to Columbia and play for USC during the 1989-90 season. Ignjatovic is a 6-foot-2, 210 pound center. Popovic is a 6-foot-3 guard. Both were members of the Yugoslavian Junior National Team which won a gold medal in the World Cup Games last summer. The two incoming freshmen scored less than 700 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Due to an NCAA rule requiring student-athletes to score 700 or better, they will only be students in the fall. Felton sees the upcoming year as an adjustment period for the two international student-athletes, pointing out the language and cultural differences of the two countries and noting the athletes' need to work on the weights. "I'm kind of disappointed they can't play this year, because they can play at the collegeiate level," Felton said. "But we'll just have to be patient for a year. In a way it's good, though, because it'll take off some pressure and let them concentrate on studies. They comprehend English fairly well, but they've got some work to do. But the university has some intensified programs where they'll get a tremendous dose of English in the next year. Plus they'll have a year to work on weights and become adjusted to this country." Ignjatovic is expected to perform well for the Gamecocks on the inside but is also a point-maker from the outside area. The two native Yugoslavians are also expected to add heighth to the team. With the signing of Ignjanovic and Popovic, USC's allotment of 15 scholarships will be filled. Felton stated that Perry Dozier has decided to foregoe his basketball career due to knee injuries which have hampered his performance in the past. Reggie Smith will also be absent when the Gamecocks take the court in the fall, freeing another scholarship for the Yugoslavians. Smith will concentrate on his academics according to Felton.
