"The British are coming, the
British are coming" and so are the
rest of the world national soccer
teams if they are good enough to survive
the qualifying tournaments.
The United States was chosen last
'week to host the 1994 World Cup
finals, the biggest single sporting
event in the world. Soccer is
- known elsewhere in the world as
football.
Only two other countries besides?
the U.S. bid for the coveted prize of
hosting the World Cup. Morocco
received seven votes and Brazil
received
two votes, but the U.S.
received 10 votes from the
21-member executive committee to
win the honor. Two remaining
members abstained on the vote.
- Because of the winning bid to host
> in 1994, the U.S. national team will
automatically qualify to play in the
final tournament.
There will be approximately 25
1 teams from around the world with
* more than 50 soccer matches schedul;
ed for the 1994 competition.
There has not been this much en*
thusiasm about soccer in the U.S.
I since the mid 70's when the North

* was fnnnrlprl r'luhs likp th?? New
- York Cosmos played in front of

Stadium in Meadowland, New

* During some of these matches,
* New York fans would harmoniously
* sing out "COSSS-MOSSS" in soft

across the bridge in New York city.
I How could they forget the great
superstars who played for the
Cosmos, like Edson Arantes Do
Nascimento, better known as Pele?

Former USC wide receiver Ryan

Morrison met with Bethea on

"Ryan Bethea has been reinstated
to the University of South Carolina
football team. We certainly are excited
about having him with us,"
Morrison said.
The 21-year-old Columbia resident

Bethea also has a record of
previous charges with local police
departments.
He was charged in Feb. 1986 with
breaking into a car and stealing a
radar detector. Bethea was arrested
again two months later when he failed
to stop for Columbia police officers
who were attempting to pull
him over for reckless driving.
In July 1986, Bethea was placed in
the Richland County Pre-Trial Intervention

available only to first-time offenders.
