As things are who cherish our homela 0 JP I die gracefully sidercd unethical for physicians to take any direct action to kill a patient. This ethical posture is accepted by many physicians, but not by all. Some will not take part in alowing a patient to die under 6'ny circumstances, while others support, both^ forms of euthanasia. The AMA's posture is based on an illogical notion that taking direct action to allow a person to die through lethal injections is morally worse than withholding treatment to permit a person to die. Although the intentions and results are the same in most cases of euthanasia, the method somehow makes a difference to the AMA. Recent studies indicate that courts have been reluctant to convict and prosecute individuals involved in euthanasia. And in California, there may soon be a referendum on the ballot to legalize euthanasia and to measure the general public's view on the issue. Not since the case of Karen Quinlan has euthanasia generated the public and professional attention and debate it has garnered recently. The debate will result in clear laws on "mercy killing" and the right of individuals to assist and respect ^ their loved ones' choice of how they want to spend their last days. Euthanasia is an issue society must address. < . V: > , >.> \ <.; -kVO'V : ' ' ?
