? North Myrtle j w ? o ? to tionaas bi By SANDRA LANG Staff writer It was hard to find a place to wiggle your toes in the sand during Liaster weekend in North Myrtle Beach. Thousands of college and high school students descended on a three- to four-block span of the coast in North Myrtle Beach during the holiday weekend to party, tan, party, drink beer, party, meei people and party. * This was not the first occurrence of its kind in North Myrtle. Many of the students who visited the coastal town for the Easter beach blast have probably been there before. Every year, travelers frotn all over the eastern section of the country make their way to a familiar warm-weather destination on South Carolina's coast. These vacationers head to the Grand Strand, a 60-mile length of beach that stretches from the North Carolina border to Georgetown and includes the city of Myrtle Beach at its heart. The Grand Strand is second only to Florida's Disney World as one of the largest attractions in the Southeast, said Myrtle Beach's local newspaper, The Sun News. Visitors can indulge themselves in waterslides, batting cages, golf courses, night clubs, restaurants, miniature golf courses, state parks, ramnornnnHc and amncotnoni norl/c Visiting the Grand Strand each year has become a tradition for many USC students. "First of all, college students come here for the beach itself," said Doug Bell, public relations director at the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. Bell said the college crowd is also attracted bv mm DOMINO'S PIZ2 Bill SUPPORTS YOI [EMMI. Music education freshman Liz Hall has vacationed with her family and friends in North Myrtle Beach every summer for seven years. "1 like to lay out in the sun, go to the Pavilion (an amusement center) and ride on the waterslides," Hall said. Hall, who lives with her family in Columbia, said she has also vacationed in Florida. "If you can t atlord to go to lort Lauderdale, it s the next best thing. It's closer." Tricia Howe, an early childhood education junior from Columbia, also visits the Grand Strand each year with her family. She said she prefers the quieter atmosphere of Pawley's Island to the downtown Myrtle Beach area. Pawley's is a small, beachhouse-covered island south of Myrtle Beach. "It's too crowded in Myrtle Beach," Howe said. " There's too many rednecks, beer bellies, and people wearing shirts with stupid sayings like 'Party Naked.'" program m msESm <w hnqu i ami '^ri \ is Allendale Cher >J,'.f^Tl!j714.^ H| Anderson Che: i^'ifi'iiitjih.^. ,.jr Bamberg Che: Barnwell Colic f ; j Beaufort Dillo j ] Calhoun Oorc j j Charleston Fairf tjV RESTAURANT "A Place Where Friends Meet" ^ iEAKEAST SANDWICHEb oice of bacon, ham Jumbo BBQ sausage, grits, toast Jumbo Hamburgei th one egg $1.30 Jumho ai.in<.() ct, th two eggs $1.75 leese Omelette $1.75 . . , or Jumbo BBQ plate usage, ham with w/Rice, Colesla\ Cheese $1.95 "Serving for 20 years and Still cooking" 2772 ROSEWOOD I)R. Wingatc, who began vacationing with her family at the Grand Strand when she was five, said, "Sometimes I don't like it because there's just so I many people." Wingatc, who attended Lower Richland High School in Columbia, said Myrtle Beach is geared more toward high school students. "That's where we went every year for spring break and the first week of summer," Wingatc said. Wingate said, "When I think of college, I think of Fort Lauderdale or Daytona." Some USC students visit the Grand Strand a great deal more than others simply because that is where their home is. Actually, living in the coastal city is "just like living in any other place," said insurance junior Billy Monckton, who has lived with his family in Myrtle beach for 12 years. I "Sometimes you realize how lucky you are when | you meet people who say they are envious because (hey wish they lived there, too, Monekton said. Monekton said North Myrtle Beach is the best part of the Grand Strand for college students to visit because, "students can rent beach houses for house parties. Also, they have better bars ? college-type bars ? up there." Monckton's roommate at USC, Tripp Baidcn, a retailing junior, has lived in Myrtle Beach all his life. "I wouldn't give up growing up there for anything," Baiden said. "It's last-paced, energetic and exciting during the three to four months of summer," Baiden said. i 1^ H 111 I (ilVJMtHHB malmBnHHRHMHBHHBHHHH okee Florence Lancaster Pickens : j iter Georgetown Laurens Richland [ ! iterfield Greenville Lexington Saluda [ j ?ton Greenwood Marion Spartanburg t j n Hampton Marlboro Sumter r ] :hester Jasper McCormic Union C: j ieid Kershaw Newburg Williamsburg K. j Orangeburg York [;; j ....
