But with the bases loaded in the second game Sunday and the memory of three strikeouts in previous innings ever-looming, Underwood got his rhythm ? and a single ? to propel USC to an 8-7 victory over Ohio State. The victory against the Buckeyes gave the Gamecocks a 2-1 edge in the season series. Ohio State crushed the Gamecocks 1A ^ ? o_. 1-. ivi-i *JII Iiauuiid] ICICVISIOII oaiuiuuy. The Gamecocks, playing a doubleheader Sunday because Friday's game against OSU was rained out, took the second game of the series 9-3. Underwood's single helped the Gamecocks improve their record to 13-7. But for Underwood, the victory was more than just a slash in the win column ? it was a goal reached. And it happened," Underwood said of his single, which occurred when the score was tied at 7. The first game of Sunday's doubleheader wasn't that close. USC jumped out in front with five runs in the first inning. OSU had the benefit of three Gamecock errors in that game, but USC's power man, Adrian Adkins, hit two homers to pace his team. Joe Cardwell pitched the entire game and improved his record to 3-0 after scattering 11 hits over seven innings. Brian Roundtree started the second game of the series. OSU took the lead in the second inning, when Jeff Bostic hit a sacrifice fly. In the bottom half of that inning, the Gamecocks tied the score. Adkins singled to left, and after Underwood struck out and Craig Stamey flied out, Phil Lillo singled. Mike Bricker, a prospect from Mt. Prospect, 111., reached on an OSU error, and Adkins slid home. OSU reclaimed the lead on Scott Meadows' single to right. Gamecock Mark Taylor, hitting . 163 on the season, walked in the bottom of the fourth to give USC a 3-2 pill ilete a double play as Gamecock outfield Foi "Th r SENI UMUM llAI AAMn? nuvc yuu uuuaiut Audiology or SpeechUSC has a master's degree to worfc with children and a< j a variety of communication h loss, stuttering, cleft palal language disorders). Beatson committed an error, allowing OSU to tie the score at 3. Senior Garrett Carter ripped a double to left, and Adkins was hit by another pitch. After Underwood laid down a sacrifice bunt, Stamcy singled to left to make it 4-3. A wild pitch brought in Adkins for a 5-3 Gamecock lead. USC clung to its lead until the seventh, when Meadows singled to left, drawing the Buckeyes even again. The score remained tied through the bottom of the seventh and on into me eighth. OSU took the lead when Bostic hit what looked like a gamewinning home run with two strikes and a man on base. But it just looked like the gamewinning blow. Hardin Brown and Mike Songini walked to open the Gamecock half of the eighth. Taylor was called safe on a bunt, which loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman Brian Williams followed with a single to left, and the Gamecocks were within one, 7-6. Carter had a sacrifice fly to score Songini, setting up Underwood's game-winning single.
