? By Bill S A bit of a iliftcrent formal this time around In the past two months many great records have been released ? it would be a shame to review just one. After a wait of almost four years, Midnight Oil has released Diesel and Dust (Columbia Records). The Australian band's production is somewhat more polished than is desirable, but n doesn't detract from the album's impact. Impassioned lyrics, dealing primarily with the plight of the Aborigines, abound in the digitally recorded work, l op cuts include the incredibly catchy "The Dead Heart" and the first single, "Beds arc Burning." T-Bone Burnett has some top notch help on his sixth solo album, The Talking Animals (Columbia Records). If names such as Tony Levin, Mitchell Froom, Bono, Ruben liiades and Peter Case don't impress you, the sor.gs certainly will. While not as inspired as I983's Proof Through the Night, tracks like "The Monkey Dance" and "The Strange Case of Frank Cash and the Morning Paper" rank with his best. Starfish (Arista Records) may not rank as the best album from The Church, but the first side is as close to perfect as music can get. Lead singer Steve Kilbey's rich voice rests comfortably on the chiming dual guitar work of Marty Wilson-Piper and Peter Koppcs. This album is the soothing balm needed alter a lough day. Top cuts include "Destination" and "Reptile." Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Si1 ' * " u Spring Bre. This band causcd quite a stir in its native England, and it is no wonder. fiiynt A/f/Jcri/iA /Dnli/nr'i m Records), the group's initial U.S. offering, is loaded with piercing guitars and a straight-forward drum sound that holds nothing back. Nourished by helpings of The Cult, Motorhead and Spinal Tap, these guys belch forth a sound all their own. With absolutely no socially redeeming value, Zodiac Mindwarp serves to remind you how much fun it was to be 13. It's more of the same from Megadeth. So Far, So Good . . . So What! (Capitol Records) follows in the footsteps of Peace Sells, But Who's Buying?. Pushed forward with a grinding dual guitar attack, this bunch leaves pseudo-metal bands such as Whitesnake in its dust. Without spandex or gobs of mousse, they let the music do the talking. The obvious highlight is the cover of the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K.," sporting former Sex Pistol Steve Jones on guitar. If all that noise makes you just a bit uneasy, check out the self-titled debut from The Mercy Scat (Slash Rccords). Featurine former Violent Fcmmes lead singer and guitarist Gordon Gano, the album is a pleasant reminder that gospel music can be fun. Surprisingly, Gano stays in the background, with lead vocal chores going to the engaging Zcna Von Heppinstall. Although Gano mav not write or sitiR in his new band, his discordant guitar is as inventive as ever. M ^ "<?/ ak's Over... i n Goes On! eekly Specials: 1.00 Longnecks! The castle, originally built for defense, iter became one of several private residences for i le Duke of Vcntadour. It was partially blown up i 1 the 17th century by allies of the king, lay aban- ; oned for 200 years and was purchased in ruins by I non-profit historical organization in 1969. The I rstoration has been going on since then. i Students in the program got involved in 1985, 'hen Watson, former assistant director of the pro- | rams, led the first-ever group of "Renaissance" 1 .udents to a castle: Chateau de Vcntadour. Monuments to be restored include two medieval villages, a cloister and three chateaus. Participants may choose historic sites dating from before Christ to the late Middle Ages and can work in French regions ranging from the Spanish to the German borders. } "You meet a lot of people," Watson said of the ^ programs. "And you certainly improve your French. You also learn about history and about Jiffcrent cultures. A big deal is it's not like being a ourist. You live there for a few weeks, and you get o know the people as people ? not just passers:>y." No prior experience in restoration or arrhacological work is needed to participate. Students must be at least 18, though, and be able to landle physically demanding jobs. Watson said that when she was at Chateau dc /entadour, much of the group's work consisted of meeting a retaining wall around the castle, which vas built right onto a rock foundation. Over the rears, trees and weeds had grown through the rock md split it, and the splits had to be filled with con rrto Wnrk nr?w chf* sairl invnlvpc rr>hitilrlino fli?? vails of the castlc itself and putting in floors. The I :astle is presently used for art shows, and once ^ estorcd, may become a conference ccntcr, she aid. In the spirit of the French chanfier or ollcctive effort, team members arc guided by cstoration specialists and actively contribute to all spects of daily life at the site.
