Sports I Wednesday, January 20, 1988 THE GAMECOCK 7 [. Coaches, met despite need < When was the last time something negative was printed about North Carolina State's athletic director and head basketball coach Jim Valvano? To answer that, one would have to reach way, way back into the time that time forgot. In short, Valvano's a media darl in6? vrii"*ii v uuauat iiv is a coach. ? There's an ongoing war between the media and coaches on the nation's sports pages these days. This war is spurred on in the same way other wars are ? by mutual fear and distrust. The media have deadlines to fight. They often run into a coach who is unwilling to offer anything more than the generic, bland quote. The scenario here is the same: Team A crushes Team B. Instead of Team A's coach speaking the truth openly by saying what a blowout it was and how much better he or she feels because of the victory, the quotes would be media-guide types: "Team B is well-coached. We played really well, but we still have some j Lady Gail By JIM STUCKEY Assistant spoils editor Before this basketball season begai the Memphis State Lady Tigers to fini the Metro Conference. That sort of junk. Coaches often accuse the media of going on witch hunts or crusades to get a coach they believe isn't doing a good enough job fired. On several occasions, their accusations are just. However, at other times, coaches' job insecurities cause them to blame the media, which is only doing a job. Coaches don't trust the media, and whether they admit it or not, they are also afraid of the media. On the nthpr ciH?* nf thp nntp nnH or microphone is the same situation. Without the cooperation of coaches, a sports writer's job could be one big headache. There wouldn't be any quotes, bland or spicy. Athletes might be told to say nothing to reporters. There might not even be post-game press conferences. Pick up the sports page of any newspaper today. Wouldn't there be a lot of white space if there were no quotes from coaches or players? "The players did an unbelievable job. I think it was our most productive game so far," Gamecock head coach George Felton said. "Our shots were falling.
