Despite patl 'Broadcast 1 By PATRICK JEAN Features editor The evening network news ? a 30-minute dosage of headlines and reports, presided over by a middle aged anchor wun a style all his own. Who arc the real personalities, and what is the real work behind that nightly half-hour fix? Broadcast News, one of the best of the 1987-88 film season, provides a plausible, realistic answer. James Brooks, a former television screenwriter/producer who made his directing dcout in 1983 with the Oscar-winning film Terms of Endearment, bases this movie at the Washington, D.C., bureau of a fictional network. Jane Craig (Holly Hunter) is the bureau's driven producer. A workaholic, she runs reporters and technicians with iron-gloved knowledge. Her agenda is so tight, she schedules five minutes daily to sob uncontrollably. T'll.'ll (TV riH'P.'tU innp'c infprtinl anguish. She is accepted on a professional level, rebuffed on a personal level. She finds a best friend in Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks), the bureau's long-suffering senior reporter. Aaron goes at the drop of a hat to Lebanon or Nicaragua, all the while yearning to be an anchorman. His work and wit earn Jane's respect, but he cannot earn what he wants from her most ? love. Tom Grunick (William Hurt), a sportscaster who worms his way into a job at the bureau, represents the modern reporter who relics on style more than substance. Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets combine the best of two musical worlds. Funderburgh is a Texas native who bases his guitar sound on the original blues of the 1950s. Vocalist Sam Myers is a Mississippi native who was part of that blues sound. Tom charms people and knows how to use them for his own gain ? a quality that both disgusts and intrigues Jane. From the moment they meet, she finds herself attracted to him, much to her and Aaron's chagrin. Hurt remains one of America's best actors. He deliberately underplays "bad guy" Tom with savvy. In doing so, he hands the film over to Hunter and Albert Brooks. Brooks (no relation to the director) is a delight. He employs much of his Woody Allen-like personal humor into Aaron's character and displays ac ting versatility. Brooks deserves the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. But overall, Hunter carries the film. A petite woman with a Georgia accent, she made her film debut this past year in Raising Arizona. As Jane, she delivers a fresh, powerful performance not seen in years. She is a shoo-in for the Best Actress Oscar. James Brooks' second film shows he still has the ability to capture life on-screen. The audience feels like the best friend of each character. Although the ending to Broadcast News is unrealistic and anticlimactic, the film remains a stunner. It provides a look behind the news ABC, CBS and NBC will never provide, and it presents a fresh slice of life rarely seen on the big screen. t ininc fnrcps: r V WW f N-f J ?
