' USC baskei off to fast i By WAYNE WASHINGTON Sports editor While the Gamecock football team is wrapping up one 01 tneir most successful seasons in many, USC's basketball teams have gotten off to a fast start. Pre season expectations were high * for both teams. Lady Gamecock head coach Nancy Wilson boldly stated in her preseason press conference that her team would win 20 games. That recruiting season yeilded the likes of Beverly Hawkins and Karen Middleton, two three-time all-state performers. Junior Martha Parker was the heart of the team this past year, averaging more than 15 points per game. Sophomore Schonna Banner, who finished second behind Parker in scoring this past season, returns also. Their combined efforts have gotten the Lady Gamecocks off to a 3-1 start, their only loss coming at the ft hands of the Lady Tigers of Auburn. /\nn juuaa Continued from page 8 The final 15:00 minutes was a game in itself. At 9:41, USC had the ball on their 45-yard line and in a third down situation, Ellis connected with Green, who apparently fumbled, but Miami wasn't awarded the ball. After a long controversy over an inadvcrtant whistle, the referee gave USC the ball back. At 9:18, Ellis dropped back to pass and was smashed by Miami's Daniel Stubbs. w Tension broke as USC's Ryan Bethea body slammed a Miami player and both sides emerged onto the Orange Bowl fighting field. Ellis was standing in the midst of the confusion and the Hurricanes went after him. He was hammered again before USC staff members could get him out and help defuse the fight. Ellis hadn't yet recovered and threw an interception. Not even use nead basketball coach George Felton and his team, who cheered for the Gamecocks in the endzone during a Gamecock timeout, could change the scoreboard. The eye >f the hurricane covered the Orange Bowl. USC fans were the only calm ones. Miami had won its 32nd straight regular season game. USC ended their regular season 8-3, and will travel to the Gator Bowl Dec. 31 to play Louisiana State University. Fdont CHICKEN OUT.
