The Army is a gre: lace to start.
That slogan has been heard quite frequently over the
radio and television.
For senior Darryl Martin, a 6-foot-7-inch center for the
' ^LlSC basketball team, the Army was a great place to start.
Martin began his basketball career not in high school,
like most college athletes, but in the military. His height
was the advantage and the main reason he began shooting
hoops.
"My brother always told me I should play basketball
because of my size, Martin said.
Although he didn't play basketball in high school, he

league when he was younger. While in the military, Martin
made the all-Army team in San Francisco, where he
was recruited by such colleges as Alabama, Louisana and
Kansas State.
Martin opted instead to come to Columbia and play for
use.
"I chose to play for USC because Columbia is my
hometown and I had a newphew that played basketball
here as well," Mar it n said.
Since coming to USC four years ago, Niartin has won
two consective Metro rebounding titles.
This past season, he averaged 10.6 rebounds per game
against conference foes and 9.5 rebounds over all.

Basketball has influenced Martin in many ways.
"If it hadn't been for basketball, I may not have met
the many people I have. My wife also influenced me to
play ball. She is real supportive," he said.
As for his future, Martin stated, "I want to graduate
first and then possibly go to the NBA. It's a long shot
right now, but the thought of playing on that level excites
me."
Head basketball coach George Felton and the
Gamecock team will rely on Martin this season as a team
leader. He has been elected by his teammates as the team
captain.
Martin's style of play seems to fit in well with the type
of basketball the Gamecocks will play this season.

Rebounding and defense has been Martin's primary job
since coming to USC. One defensive effort he will trully
never forget was his first experience on the college level. It
was a game in which the Gamecocks fell short by one k i
point to Louisville, the eventual NCAA national
champions.
In that game, Martin learned the value of speed and
good defense. Rebounding and defense have been his j.
main priorities since that game. \
Martin is hopeful for a good season. "I wish for
everyone to give it their best shot and win the Metro Confernce
title," he said.
