Tuition will probably increase next year, despite the urgings of Gov. Carroll Campbell to keep tuition and fees at their present levels. Holderman cites major education spending cuts by the state ^ 1 A LI. * 1 C uenerai /\sscmuiy uvci uic pasi icw ycai:> as mc mam icujuii iui the increase. "We don't have any choice. We didn't raise tuition this year. We are, I'm sure, going to have to raise tuition next fall. The amount depends on the funding level we get from the state," Holderman said. It is inevitable that funds must be raised to support the entire program, and tuition is a main source of income for the university. Higher tuition will hurt everyone, but some more than others. It may mean the difference between attending USC or settling for a lesser school with lower costs, for some students. But most people agree with the old adage of "if you think education is expensive, try ignorance." However, if the price goes up, USC students should get a better product. No matter how much it hurts, quality costs money, and we all see the value of winning a national reputation as a bona fide l i?4:...: 1 * .1 ?u: 1 . ,4 *u? rescarLii niMiiuiun, uui me maul uiiug iui uic aiuucma is mcu professors' classroom performance. The university should pledge to those who supply it with ever-increasing tuition that it will investigate the presumable minority of sub-par professors and especially the role of teaching assistants, if they are to justify a higher price tag. In an article in the Nov. 4 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Ernest Boyer recommends that "good teaching should be weighed as heavily as research in tenure and promotion decisions." He goes on to say no more than 20 percent of the faculty should be part time. This includes teaching assistants, or TAs. If professors do not want to grade papers, they are in the wrong business. It is not fair to students to listen to their professors' lectures and then write a paper for the TA. It is not fair to the student or the TA. Any degee of subjectivity for the TA is too much. And then there is the untenured professor who has somehow managed to be rehired. This is a small portion of the faculty, to be sure, and these professors will probably rot last very long, but they are out there today. One is caught between a rock and a hard place. You do not want a TA to touch your paper until you hear the professor say something such as "your grade in this class is just between you and I." Inst this nast wwk n fp]pvi<;irm aHvprlicemrnt for a certain program promoted an interview with model Christie Brinkley. "Find out how she manages a career, family and marriage," the voice said as Brinkley's photograph appeared on the screen. Cute, real cute. Did anyone ask her husband, Billy Joel, to give an interview on how he manages the same things? Or do we have different ? defined as "lower" ? expectations of women? I wonder how many people watched that program. I certainly wasn't interested. Not that 1 have anything against Brinkley, but I would have been more interested in an interview about her career and how the recent changes in her life have affected it. i>u, 11idi 5 uui nit saint iiuug ad uuvv mil manages a career, family and marriage." It's not news anymore for women to do all three, and its degrading to assume it still is. Let's take another group of advertisements. How many of you have seen a copy of PlaygirP. How many have read Playboy? Similar magazines, but quite different audiences. But if you looked at just the advertisements, you'd never know that Playgirl is a women's magazine. Talking abou As I have done in the past, I am going to talk about many things so I can wind down a bit and get all this old stuff out of my system before next semester. Is it just me, or is it much, much too early to be watching Christmas commercials on television? It's obscene how commercial this once-quaint, little holiday has been made by the merchants of America. If they'd wait until Halloween was over, it might not be so bad. If they'd wait for Thanksgiving to gear up, it wouldn't be so bad. But no, already you see commercials for Christmas albums such as the Christmas Music Treasury and the Country Music Treasury. r>.?u11?n u u~ dui iiu, nicy mail uciuic naiiuwccu wuu uic subtle hints about how soon Christmas is coming. Its advertisers use sound business practice by trying to reach a receptive audience. You wouldn't want to run an advertisement for Debbie Does Dallas in Good Housekeeping. But the critical difference is advertisements in Playgirl often show scantily clad women to entice the readers into buying a certain product. How pathetic. One can argue successfully that photographic layouts in the various adult magazines are artistic, but can you really use the same arguments about the advertisements? Many readers have complained about the degradation of women in PlaygirV s advert Christmas, f Stephen vwjgEgP Guilfoyle s USC orchestras. And I pretty much agreed with him that it was a shame students aren't supporting classical music. I think students ought to catch up on some classical music before they graduate, and the USC Symphony Orchestra plays some of the best, from Mozart to Beethoven and the rest of the powderedwig crowd. The football strike didn't bother me much. I prefer college football. I've got friends who like to put their faces up to photocopiers and press the buttons. Apparently, the advertisements work, or they wouldn't be as common. j It's sad we're willing to put up with this. I mean, it's like me going on television and saying, "Take my wife, please. She's great with all those herbs and spices." They wouldn't let me get away with that, so why the chicken? They should have Sylvester the Cat do those commercials. You'd expect him to say a spitty, drooly, "Sufferin' sucatash, that's great chicken." But Foghorn? Fie preaches genocide for his own race. " My dad bought me a book that's full of laws and sayings like Murphy's law. My favorite is one by Alfred Smith, a former governor of New York who ran against Franklin Roosevelt for president. And I like to think of that law when I listen to what certain people in Student Government say they are doing. He said: "No matter how you slice it, it's still baloney."
