Patterson Hal service to prot By IRMA R. RATCHFORD Stuff writer In a new effort to combat safety I I I..II |si vsiM\,ma, ivdiutuid ui i diitnuii nan are initiating their own escort service. The service, called Protect Our Women, is being organized chiefly by the resident government in hopes of meeting the needs of the female students. f Since the escort service is in its preliminary stages, it will be restricted to the Thomas Cooper Library. The residents will serve as volunteers by working 30-minute shifts from 8 p.m. until midnight Monday through Thursday. Two residents will work each shift. Business sophomore June Warren, Patterson government president, said the idea originated after a stabbinc recently occurred on campus. "If the escort service works well, I would like to see it go through permanentMountaine< v ? To prepare members for the hardest mountain climbs thev can face, two training missions are required. Learning the right knots, techniques and technical terms is essential for the beginning climber, Fore said. "We stress safety, because you just can't scramble up a mountain. People who are sloppy and don't pay attention to small details shouldn't be there. "It's a special thing to climb a mountain, but if you're not interested, why go?" Climbing about 50 feet straight up is the first step in mountain climbing, Fore said. After a month of working A with an experienced trainer, almost ^ all novices can go up a 450-foot cliff. Graduate student Leslie Foster, resident hall director, said women are not aware of how many times rape happens and that they need to take precautions. "Everyone has the attitude that it is not going to happen to them," Foster said. "POW will be very beneficial to the residents if everyone will participate, said math senior Ursula Brunson, secretary of the government. The escort service will be expanded to include other parts of the campus if it is successful, Warren said. A representative from Alpha Phi Omega has volunteered to help, she said. "We need something like this," said journalism freshman Lou Mazur. The service is looking for volunteers. ering Continued from page 4 tain is a good place to hang on, Fore said. But bushes and trees are taboo to mountain climbers. "Wc don't grab anything organic to pull ourselves up on," Fore said. "Wc also try not to run out of equipment in the middle of a climb." The first one to reach the top names the peak, Fore said. "Fresh Garbage," "The Mummy," and "Sittina Bull" are all Deaks in the North Carolina mountains that club members have nicknamed. "Whenever I first started climbing, I thought 'Why am I doing this?"' Fore said. "Then I realized there's something different every time. No two rocks are the same anywhere you climb. "There are no manmade obstacles up there, it's just you and the mountain. After you reach the top, you have your? own private view. It definitely puts you closer to God." The Baptist Student Union offers two Bible studies to students, sociology sophomore Jenny Arledge said. Arlcdge, BSU vice president, said one program is a general study of the Bible and requires little or no previous knowledge. She said it provides students with the chance to attend many programs throughout the year. Meetings for this level of study are held every Thursday. They are led by Woody Hammett, a campus minister. Arlcdgc said topics include dating and sex in the Christian perspective. Arledgc said BSU will also be conducting a more in-depth analyzation called the masterlife study. The study is open to 20 participants. "It is more personal and profound than the other program." She said these events are not just for Baptists, but for anyone who would like to participate in Christian-oriented activities. ' ' : :?: . , i'; ; i . III! "The studies take place in 10 dorms around campus," Sharpless said. "The dorm studies will be held about 7 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. each night and will be relatively short, about 30 minutes each." The programs for students center around relevant issues 10 uicw u;iny lives miiu uuihiuvci siai iupic<> such as AIDS. The center offers two studies for international students that cater to their special language barriers, she said. Other activities such as ice cream socials and seminars will also take place to bring all the students from the different dorms together. Amanda Conard, a hotel, restaurant and tourism administration senior, said,"I think Bible studies are helpful for some people who are away from home for the first time.
