Ne ws makers Magazines disagree over richest man NEW YORK ? A Japanese landlord is the richest person in the world, says Forbes magazine, which places his wealth at $20 billion. Not so, says Fortune magazine, which put the Sultan of Brunei at the top of its list of fatcats and potentates. Forbes gives the golden laurels to Yoshiaki Tsutsumi, but Fortune credits Tsutsumi with a meager $2.5 billion and said Brunei's "freespending sultan of oil," Hassanal Bolkiah, has a net worth of $25 billion. Forbes said it disqualified the sultan and others "since their power is political first and economic only secondarily." The sniping broke out this past weekend as the rival business magazines issued news releases on their forthcoming issues. Fortune said Monday that Forbes, in a "bizarre move," rushed its list into prim tms weeK to neat fortune to tnc newsstanu. rornes aumiuea it. but noted that it has been printing its own list of the 4()0 richest Americans since 1982. Bulimia threat overblown, study says Reports of the bulimia epidemic among college-age women arc inaccurate, says a new study. A 1981 survey at one college reported bulimia affected as many as 19 percent of the women on campus, and at least one popular magazine suggests that half the women on campuses suffer from eating disorders, according to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association. However, recent research conducted at the University of Pennsylvania indicates that only about 1.3 percent of female students and 0.1 percent of male students actually fit the clinical diagnoses of bulimia or binge-purge syndrome. College students, because of dating and status pressures, may be more vulnerable to eating disorders, according to the report. SMU president talks about scandals DALLAS ? Two weeks after taking office, the new president of Southern Methodist University finally talked about the sports scandals that have made SMU synonymous with corruption in collegiate athletics. The scandal, President A. Kenneth Pye said Aug. 29, has as much to do with education at SMU "as what's happening in the Persian Gulf." About the time Pye took office, the NCAA suspended athletes from Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Alabama in connection with the acceptance of money from agents. Jewish jokes unfunny, feminist says NEW YORK ? American college students are helping spread a form of anti-Semitism with "Jewish-American Princess" jokes that portray Jewish women as "manipulative, self-serv g, materialistic (and) sometimes dishonest," Susan Weidman Schneider told a feminist conference Sept. 2. Schneider, editor of a Jewish feminist magazine, cited an American University "Biggest JAP on Campus" contest, "anti-JAP graffiti" at Syracuse University's Bird Library and the popularity of "JAP Buster"Tshirts at the University of Pennsylvania as proof of the rise of a "classic anti-Semitic" racism. Many people, said author Francine Klagsbrun, don't seem to realize the jokes are a form of racist stereotyping. I Donate Blood. The 1BJ3 Personal Sys is here.
