\ ?-M Pope John P; His Holiness Pope John Paul II, leader of the Roman Catholic Church, made his first trip ever to USC's historic Horseshoe and to Columbia Friday. About 13,000 students, faculty and staff members and several spouses stood out in the sweltering heat for hours just to see a glimpse of the pope as he rode his popemobile into The Horseshoe for a meeting with 27 religious leaders in the President's House. g?R^nK*||l The pope addressed the crowd at The Horseshoe for H about 10 minutes and then went inside for his meeting. He told the enthusiastic crowd that he loved them, as \ - -=^." some cnanted "John Paul II, we love you." Many looked ~ for shade as the temperature rose near 95 degrees. [ Several people had to be helped by medics because of the heat. [ Everyone seemed to get involved in the act of greeting the pope. It was "limited dialogue" 3 Bgfl because the questions and comments of the other christian leaders were submitted to the Vatican before the pope came to America. Because the security called for the residents of The ' ' Horseshoe to move out for the day, The Horseshoe government provided shirts for the residents who moved out of their rooms.
