In fact, even to * this gung-ho sports traditionalist, it's worth watching. No, we aren't talkin' GLOW: Glamorous Ladies of Wrestling. We're talkin' arena football, 9 more bone-crunching action than P a barrel of Shiites. More thrilling than sneaking salt and pepper shakers out of Russell House. Baby, we're talkin' excitement, and all you need to do is mcmnriyp thp rnlpc* Rule No. 1: Nets are strung across both end zones, except for the area between the uprights. Rule No. 2: The uprights are closer together than real football. They're also longer, and the crossbar is higher off the ground. These two rules combine to cause the best part of arena footle hnll ? rnllisinnc Ralls hnnnrp |wk off the uprights; balls bounce off the nets; players bounce off each ^ other. This bouncing gives the game a flavor reminiscent of the all-time cable sports champ, Australianrules football, which, as we all know, has no rules. Rule No. 3: Punting is not allowed in arena football. This snouia mean inai teams win tnrni the fans by always "going for it" on fourth down, but that just doesn't happen, thanks to the next rule. Rule No. 4: The field is only 50 LL yards long, so teams are close enough for a field goal at all times. Clemson coach Danny ||| Ford would love this rule. He t likes field goals. m Rule No. 5: Everybody plays | offense and defense. Everybody :!j except quarterbacks and kickers, i that is. Now, this doesn't mean they're wimpy; just ask them.
