Currie was drafted in the 32nd round of baseball's amateur draft and will report to the Dodgers' rookie league team in Great Falls, Mont. In 1987, Currie went 2-3 while hntrlino ininrir*; The iiminr had a 5.65 earned run average while collecting 34 strikeouts. The 6-4, 185-pound Lexington native passed up his final year of eligibility to play for the Dodgers. He is the second Gamecock to do so this year; Dave Hollins gave up his senior season to sign with the San Diego Padres. Lee Whatley also signed with the Dodgers and will probably be a teammate of Currie's in Great Falls. Curric tossed three career shutouts for Carolina while compiling a record of 15-7. That included a complete game win for USC over Southern Mississippi in the 1986 Metro Conference tournament. The performance earned him All-Tournament honors. The 1986 season was Currie's best as he went 7-2 with a 3.09 ERA. He had a 6-2 record his freshman year. I ft i*i. | Ujyi/f i/y g>i Intramurals Play began this past week in intramural softball. Rain washed out the first day of action and kept the schedule to one game Wednesday and Thursday. There are 33 teams competing, consisting of students, faculty and staff, said intramural director Bruce Butrym. Whatlcy will probably join Gamecock teammate Brian Curric on the Dodgers' rookie league team in Great Falls, Mont. The signing brings the numbei of 1987 Gamecocks to join the nrn rnnkc tn fivn Whatley, a 6-4, 210-pound right-hander, was the Metro Conference's leading regular season reliever mis year, going i-/. witn a 2.17 earned run average and seven saves. He was the Gamecocks' workhorse in the Metro Conference Tournament this past month, appearing in all three USC games and giving up only two runs in 5-1/3 innings.
