After FSAA lost many members to graduation, he watched it reform this past fall with freshman members. Babson said he was interested not in being an officer for the group, but in working tables, attending public demonstrations and using his work on the divestment issue at Brown. "I hope that my contributions to it has been able to allow them to do more of the organizational work, which is needed to keep this going, keep it in the face of the administration and maybe achieve divestment." USC partially divested this past year, but FSAA is calling for total divestment. Babson said he has always been interested in racial issues as they apply to archeology, especially in the 19th century South. "I deal with the fact that many of my ancestors were slaveowners and racists. In fact, some of my most recent ancestors tended to be racists ? and 1 cannot be sure of myself sometimes. "It's like one man said verv eloquently: 'If you're a white man, you can never be sure when or if you've left the fold of the racist people,' because it's an important part of our culture," he said. Babson participated in the march on Forsyth County, Ga., in January, but he said he had never been in a march as large as the one held Saturday. The Forsyth County march was more significant in showing a societal change, he said. "That was a spontaneous demonstration in which 25,000 people showed up and scared the hell out of 700 rednecks who thought they had the upper hand." HMW^Su in i un r^.-rrrv; Z- r:-. 7*5^..? "During the Carter administration, people might have disliked Jimmy Carter for being a wimp or a fool, but we felt he was more or less on our side. It was like he would, if he could, do something about these things. He had a much more sane policy about South Atrica or Central America man ivcagaii n?.>. "Now you have a very different situation with the Reagan administration. You have a man who has demonstrated time and time again that he's an incompetent fool. His policies, anywhere in the world, arc based on lies, pipe dreams and probably psychotic visions. You could talk to him all day long and never make an impression, because he's already made up what little mind he has," he said. Babson said these marches show that people have a higher level of world consciousness. "We arc at least taking our time and effort to show that we have some solidarity with groups of people in foreign countries whose problems are much, much worse than ours." Babson will receive his master's degree from USC in August. He said he has a job lined up with the a archeology department at Louisiana State Universi ty, and he plans to remain politically active tnere with groups such as Amnesty International. "I'm impressed with the fact that it was a cold, wet day in late April, and 150,000 people turned out for this march. It's been over for six hours; I don't know what effect it will have, but 3 hope it will wake up people," he said. It was already after midnight on the bus going back to Columbia. Babson polished his "Impcach Reagan" button and put his head back to sleep. A smile could still be seen beneath his mustache. I ; mm "V- % ^ ?- " T*. ?y. ;.
