Although South Carolina Economic Indicators show that employment gains arc on the move in the state, some Columbia-area businesses who attended the Business Expo 'K7 at the S.C. State Fairgrounds on Saturday, said their companies probably won't look to graduates for new employment. The South Carolina Economic Indicators is published by the USC College of Business Administration and the state Employment Security Commission. The report noted that the most significant change was a drop of 0.6 percent in the state unemployment rate to 5.4 percent. The national unemployment rate is 6.8 percent. As expected, there was "some weakness" in construction in January, the report said, "but as long as interest rates remain low, there will not be significant problems." Ellson said the report is based on 16 characteristics, called indicators, in South Carolina's economy. ? Of the 16 indicators monitored in January, 10 rose, five declined and one, new car registrations, was not available. This compared with nine advances, six declines and one unchanged in December. "The eight leading indicators tell what will happen in the future, and the eight coincidental indicators tell what is happening now," he said.
