In 1986, it was the 4,run-and
shoot" offense, but at this year's
spring football game, it was the
"50" defense that dominated the
action at Williams-Brice
Stadium.
But "dominated" doesn't
begin to describe what the
defenses did at the springpractice-ending
Garnet and
White game Friday.
With 15,500 people looking
on, the Gamecocks got a chance
to show what their new defense
would be like, but may have done
more defending than head coach
Joe Morrison had counted on.
The game ended with the Garnet
team winning 2 0, and, as with
tradition, the winning team got
steak for dinner, while the losers
ate hot dogs and beans.
"Our kicking game got a little
more work tonieht than we an
iticipatcd," Morrison said in his
>post-game news cc^ference.
"But, all in all, I saw some fine
^ individual performances out
W there tonight. I thought we had
an excellent spring practice."

The No. 13 Privateers swept
the 14th-ranked Gamecocks by
8-7, 11-7 and 11-6 margins.
Carolina is now 27-8 on the year,

is their longest of the year. USC

Tech topped them this past year.
The Gamecocks jumped out to

and still led 7-6 jn the top of the
eighth inning before an infield
grounder took a bad hop past
USC first baseman Charlie
Aldrich and turned into a gamewinning
two-run single. Lee
Whatley (2-2) took the loss as the
Privateers snapped a 12-game
^ Carolina winning streak.

Individual performances were
all the fans had to watch, as
neither team could mount any
type of drive. The two teams
combined for only 11 first downs
for the contest. The game lasted
only about an hour and a half as
the quarters were shortened to 12
minutes, and the clock ran continuously
except during timeouts
and the last two minutes of each

The White team's senior defensive

"Coach (Joe Lee) Dunn has
come in, and he and his defensive
staff have done an excellent
