Sports I Wednesday, April 8, 1987 9 H A I rr. s\riure no where are I remember baseball in its purest form. It was a Saturday in April. I got up early so 1 could go to the park in the northwest side of Detroit to play Strikeout. Strikeout was a game you played in Detroit, and, I would venture to guess, in every city that has concrcte walls or very few available baseball /^inniAvi/'tr T r*/\ 111 rl Kn nlnim/A Ktf uiaiuuuuo. 11 vuuau uv ijy two or more people. First, you had to spray paint a box at the level of the strike zone on the wall. Then the object was to hit a tennis ball down the street or parking lot before being struck out. The farther the ball went, the better | the hit. If the ball hit the Buick " at the other end of the parking lot it was a homer, but if it just made it past Arthur's brother, 1a ..... ~ 1 _ a i 1 n was a smgic. /\nu unywnere in between was a toss up. That Saturday I got to the park first. It must have been 7 a.m. I threw the ball against the wall for about an hour before my friends and fellow park rats showed up. We played Strikeout 'til noon, and then got up a game on the vacant lot. We used sticks for the bases, fe This ritual was repeated every w Saturday and every day during the summer. * That particular day was my MVP day for Strikeout. It was probably the single greatest day of my baseball career. Andre Harrelson was the best player in the park. He was a tall, lanky 13-year-old. I was 9. He could hit and throw farther and run faster than anyone his age. He got a college scholar9 ship, I later heard. After the lot game, when it was getting dark and people were heading home, he and I got into a one-on-one game of GOT I* We urgently need peo to aid In medical resea had mono within the \ ; qualify for $100 per w time. The game went to extra ini ings, as the parking lot ligh came on. We had played to j-j ne. I was playing way over ir head that day. But everything threw seemed to break the rig] way. My curve was actually cu ving, and my slider was actual sliding. In the 10th, he hit the tenn ball over the Buick for a twi run homer. I thought I wi history. When I came, up he quick got two outs on me. I knew tli was the end. After serving up a ball to tl outside, he threw two strikes 1 me. The next pitch I strok* past the horseshoe pit for double. Then he walked n before I again hit his pitch, th time for a single. The bas were loaded with ghost runnei and they were screaming at r for a hit. He threw me an inside slid to brush me back, but wouldn't move. I hit the nc pitch so far I lost sight of it. \ 1~ A IUUI1U 11 111 IUC appic I1CC < Mrs. Beard's lawn across t street.
