On ESPN this past week they had some statistic that said the past two times the University of North Carolina won more than 32 games, it won the national championship. UNC had already won 33 and were to take on Syracuse to get to the final four. But Dean Smith's boys pulled their annual March choke and fell to the Orangemen, which brought back the old question, "Why can't Dean get his team to put together the big win?" Dean's philosophy of coaching is team first, player second, which is good most of the time. But somewhere along the lino I IMP 1~.-? - it. umv, iu^i me cinuiioii inai is a necessity in college hoops. Pep Talk By Jeff Shrewsbury lose edge ason play thinkable, so iherr'c no an. ticipation left to bring out the emotion. It would be foolish to say Dean Smith isn't a good coach, or the Tarheels aren't worth a damn, because he is and they arc, for the regular season that is. But something happens when they get to the tourney; there seems to be something missing. It's the emotion. UNC is usually an undisputed top-five team every year, and every year after the Heels choke, people say, "Boy you just wait 'til next year they'll be even better." And usually they arc, but they can't seem to get it going at tourney time. In 1982, the Heels put it together. They did it with the best damn execution I've ever seen, and a little bit of emotion strapped on there, in the form of Michacl Jordan. UNC needs to get it back and start scrapping a bit. They need to stop being the gentlemen of college basketball all the time and play some street ball. If they don't, people like me will never stop picking on them. mm > is looking for a DY ACTOR during the park's 17 Season \ will be held on RCH 29,1987 Dwinds >06 ext. 2408 for appointment. rs should prepare a 1 minute comedy i the style of Groucho Fields for the audition. Aldrich, who tripled in the seventh, hit a solo homer for USC's final run. USC stole four bases in the seventh inning as they won their 17th game against five losses. Gamecock head coach June Raines praised his team's hitting after USC completed a sweep of the Eagles. "We've been in a slump something fierce. We're fighting our way out of it." Raines also said he was glad his team took advantage of the five Eagle errors. "They kicked it around a bit, and we had to take advantage of it." <! nerican.
